Just being a support for the student in question. Now, obviously, the first idea to jump to there is academically, and this is super important, of course, but also school is a naturally difficult time for a lot of students for a large variety of reasons, and even if the tutor nor student realize it, being there to help dealing with it is a massive…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to understand how the student learns. By knowing the students learning preferences and ability the tutor can tailor their approach to individuals rather than utilising a blanket approach, which can often leave some students behind. My strengths lie in the ability to communicate ideas or…

Although high results is a must, tutors should also respect or accept what students may want to gain out of their HSC marks. We cannot force students to learn but making the content more interesting will help motivate those who struggle to grasp the concept. The key point is that after every session, the student can leave knowing that they have…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to respect their intellect. A tutor must always be careful not to break a student’s confidence. Sometimes, students may feel low for not being able to catch up to their friends. In such case, it is very important as a tutor to encourage the student and bring back his confidence. Childhood…

I think the most improtant thing that a tutor can do is to change their teaching style to reflect the students needs rather than having the same structure for every student because it probably won't work for everyone. I think my main strength is being able to understand when the student needs help and when they need to push themselves to try their…

The most important thing which a tutor can do for a student is to make him understand the concept instead of just showing him how to solve the problems. The one thing more than anything that a tutor can do is to offer a safe place where students will not be afraid of failure. Then guide them step by step until they understand the concept, and encourage them to carry on even when things get difficult. A good tutor gives confidence and no knowledge. My strength as a tutor will be like 1.Clear…

Being both supportive and empathetic are important. Encouraging a student and not making a huge deal about mistakes while congratulating correct responses builds a student's self-confidence which makes them perform better overall and develop a liking for the subject. Also, being understanding when the student struggles to perform when facing more…

Most important point of being a tutor isn't the ability of doing the question yourself, or understanding it yourself, as a tutor this is already expected, so conveying the concept to the student in such a way that they are able to convey it along to someone else is one of the fundamental aspects of tutoring. Helping students with topics they…

Marti, Wetherill Park

Inside Wetherill ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Andrew focused on subtraction using different strategies and tackled word problems involving money, along with revising time concepts like calendars and converting between units such as seconds, minutes, and hours.

For Year 10, Judy worked through algebraic fractions—simplifying, factoring, and adding/subtracting them—and also revised surds in preparation for an upcoming test.

In Year 11 Chemistry, Sam covered Lewis dot diagrams to understand chemical bonding types and practiced applying different separation techniques required by the course.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were observed across year levels.

In Year 4 mathematics, reliance on mental calculation—"gets lost sometimes" when not writing down steps—led to confusion with subtraction and slow progress in single-digit operations.

During a Year 9 trigonometry session, homework was often incomplete or rushed; one lesson note read, "Attempted homework minutes before our session – only half was completed."

For a senior student preparing for an exam, lack of organization meant the upcoming test was only discovered in class, leaving minimal time for review.

Moments of tiredness and distraction resulted in forgotten steps and lower motivation during key lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Wetherill Park tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student, who previously hesitated to use her calculator, growing noticeably quicker and more confident as she tackled complex maths problems—by lesson's end, she was solving each question with increasing speed.

In Year 9, one student who usually guessed when confused started actively asking for help instead, leading to clearer understanding of algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled last week with number lines not only finished his homework independently this time but also correctly explained previous mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wetherill Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like William Stimson Public School.
