Students often seek tutoring not just because they don't understand a subject, but because they lack confidence and love for learning that subject. The most important thing a tutor can try to do is to help that student find the self-belief that they are capable of mastering anything they put their mind to. My main strength as a tutor is my ability…

It is important to be patient with a student; they won't always understand what is being taught and as a tutor you need to be able to explain something in a way that they will understand the concept. I think it's also crucial that the tutor is organised; arrives a few minutes early and knows what they will be going through and brings any…

The most important thing I could do for my students would be giving them confidence in themselves and their abilities to attempt any question rather than being intimidated and not even trying. To achieve this, I believe a positive, patient, and supportive relationship needs to be formed so the student is not afraid of failing. I believe failing to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand the student's learning style and being able to adapt accordingly. Students often learn at a different pace from each other and a tutor should understand when to slow down, when to speed up, or when to adjust the teaching style to suit the student's learning…

It is a necessity for a tutor to establish rapport with their students. Being supportive is very important. A tutor must give plenty of encouragement and support to a student at all times in order to help them achieve their best. As someone who has had tutors in the past; I can say with confidence that a tutor allows the student to catch up on what they didn’t understand in school the first time. Some topics are just harder than others.Unfortunately, most schools won’t slow down for each individual student just because they’re having a hard time. A tutor can enable a…

I believe a tutor should be able to clearly communicate the fundamentals of a subject in simple terms to ensure the student can build on their knowledge. I believe this also increases the chances that the student will actually want to learn and improve more than they did before. Understanding any problems the student is facing with subject is also…

To explain things in such a way as if they aren't familiar with the concept. This way they are able to understand what they are doing and why it is done in such a way. I believe understanding the concept is the most important way to be able to apply it to questions. It also provides a good foundation to attempt higher order questions with critical…

Inside WillageeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Paige worked through real numbers, estimation, and the multiplication and division of decimals, with a focus on identifying areas for improvement.

Year 8 Oli concentrated on solving linear equations using graphs and revising properties of quadrilaterals in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 9 Isabel practiced trigonometry questions and completed a mock test to identify strengths and weaknesses ahead of her assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly skipped reviewing previous lesson notes, which meant class time was used reteaching old multiplication techniques instead of advancing ("we had to go back and repeat some multiplication techniques").

In Year 10, one learner struggled with algebra worded problems—hesitating to write out working, which made it hard to spot where the translation from words to equations broke down.

A Year 4 student found expressing number facts in writing difficult; this sometimes slowed progress when practicing sums with larger numbers or using inequality symbols.

Missed homework and unorganised files led to extra confusion during sessions for a senior student revising real numbers.

Recent Achievements

A Willagee tutor recently noticed that a Year 10 student, Abbi, who previously needed help with factorising quadratics, now solves standard quadratic equations independently and completes her homework using the elimination method without prompting.

In Year 11, Isabel showed a shift from just following steps to confidently creating algebraic equations from worded problems—a skill she found challenging last term.

Meanwhile, Xavier in Year 3 has started counting numbers and solving addition problems on his own after weeks of needing reminders; he now initiates his work without cues from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Willagee Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caralee Community School.
