It is to emphatize and to have patience with the student. Not everyone has the same learning curve. Other people learn faster than the others. It is common to get frustrated when your student is not understanding what you are trying to teach him/her, however, do not let your students feel and see that. It may not only hurt their self-confidence…

I believe the most important thing an english tutor does for a student is allow the student to develop a solid grasp of the content matter and hence achieve the best results. My strengths as a tutor is taking the time to ensure a student has a solid grasp on a concept before moving on to more content. My biology and chemistry teacher did this so I…

A tutor is a mentor for his students. For an english tutor, it is necessary to have full knowledge of that field he/she is teaching. In most areas, its a misconception that tutors are there to help students in coming first in every aspect related to studies. But that's not true, in my opinion, tutors can only give knowledge of any particular…

I think the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence within them as it is a key catalyst in nurturing a drive for learning. If a student is confident, it is more likely that they will engage in classwork with a more positive mindset and will not be afraid to ask questions. Moreover, I think it is important…

Many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they doubt themselves. In this case, it is important for the tutor to encourage students and create a supportive learning environment in a way that helps the student see their progress. It is also important for a tutor to guide the student through a question, rather than just…

Inside Windsor DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sienna practised the split and compensation strategies for addition and subtraction, and strengthened multiplication skills with a focus on times tables.

In Year 9, Chitleen worked through persuasive essay writing by applying the PEEL structure and analysing language techniques in texts like "Rabbit Proof Fence" and "Vertigo."

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Justin focused on film analysis of "Whale Rider," identifying key film techniques and structuring paragraphs for his informative writing tasks.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student's writing showed repeated issues with organizing ideas into clear paragraphs and overcomplicating descriptions—"he needs to learn how to simplify his essays," as one tutor observed.

When asked to describe a scene, sentences often ran together without periods, making the meaning hard to follow.

In Year 10 English, another student hesitated to use more complex language techniques, sticking closely to familiar vocabulary even when prompted for richer detail.

For a Year 11 Maths lesson, reliance on calculators sometimes replaced genuine working out; when a formula was forgotten, progress stalled entirely until notes could be found.

Recent Achievements

One Windsor Downs tutor recently saw a high school student who used to hesitate with essay writing now independently planning body paragraphs for an English assignment after taking feedback on board.

Another high schooler, after struggling with trigonometry, began actively working through problems in real time and was able to solve simultaneous equations without prompting—something he previously avoided.

In a younger session, a primary student who once needed frequent reassurance has started asking her own questions when stuck and quickly grasped new maths concepts; she finished a word problem aloud without pausing for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hawkesbury Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northbourne Public School.
