Make sure the student has the right attitude towards studying and enjoying as well. I personally think enjoying what you are doing is the most important. From my experience, It is way easier to learn and memorize the things you like. Forcing the student to do something worsens the attitude and possibly the grade as well. I think my biggest…

To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a students confidence in their abilities. This could involve encouraging them, celebrating small achievements, and creating a supportive environment where mistakes are considered learning opportunities. Alongside teaching concepts clearly, helping students believe in themselves ensures…

Building their confidence and helping them actually understand the process, not just the answer. Also creating a comfortable space where they feel okay asking questions. I'm patient and good at explaining things in a simple way. I can break down harder concepts and adjust how I teach depending on what works best for the…

A tutor not only should be able to help a student understand the subject on a deeper level, but also spark their interests within a subject. They can also serve as great role models which can help them in becoming a better person overall. I am very adaptable, resilient and patient with my teaching. I focus on trying to make sure the fundamentals…

Listen to their problems and try to understand their perspective when it comes to studies and course works. Be some one they can rely upon with their intellectual and educational problems. I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create a space that they feel comfortable to be challenged and to learn in. It’s one thing to just help with answering questions but to encourage and motivate students to take on the difficult concepts even when they're working on their own, this is crucial and shows growth.…

For me, I consider giving them the knowledge and confidence to be able to step out of their comfort zone to achieve something previously unachievable the most important thing. Sometimes, a tutor is a guiding mentor, you provide them with stories, knowledge and experience. Then, the student would be able to utilize that knowledge and build a good…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

I think a tutor's primary role is to simplify complex concepts, adapt to individual needs, and foster confidence. Encouraging critical thinking, setting goals, and providing a positive atmosphere are crucial for independent learning. I believe my strengths as a tutor lie in my ability to break down difficult ideas into manageable steps, making it…

I always work with the student/parent initially to establish a goal (however broad or specific) to aim towards in order to develop an action plan and help their students to achieve results. Secondly, I create such a plan of action and apply it, making the necessary tweaks to improve it as we go along. Finally, I always remain adaptable to change…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to tailor the lessons to fit the individual's needs, strengths and weaknesses. Another essential aspect is to provide constructive feedback that allows the student to consistently grow and improve. The most important things a tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. I believe a good tutor should remove the fear of a subject, if any, from a student's mind and encourage them to learn in more detail, while providing…

1. Personalize the learning. every student is different, so what works for one does not necessarily work for the other. 2. Be ready to help. As the job entails, the tutor must be willing to work according to the student's desire. 3. Teaching them how to learn. the ultimate goal of the tutor is teaching the students how to learn and apply. Our daughter is enjoying having someone (who isn't either of her parents, and has more patience than we do as well!) take her step by step through what she doesn't 'get' and then work out strategies that will help her understand what the question is asking and how to approach it.
Roisin, Winston Hills

Inside Winston HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Kent focused on solving simultaneous equations and revising trigonometry concepts, including working through bearing problems with diagrams.

Year 11 student Miles worked on factorisation techniques and deepened understanding of logarithms, using real-world word problems to reinforce concepts.

Meanwhile, another Year 10 student tackled coordinate geometry by practicing mid-point and distance formulas as well as plotting points on graphs for exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without finishing several homework pages, making it difficult to identify which skills needed extra support.

In Year 11, "she didn't complete any homework from the exam booklet I created for her"—missing out on practice that could have boosted confidence before assessments.

One Year 5 learner struggled to set out multiplication working neatly, often omitting steps: as a tutor wrote, "needs to structure out work in a manner that ables others to understand progress."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student kept forgetting formulas between lessons and had trouble applying them under timed conditions during class quizzes.

Recent Achievements

One Winston Hills tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously rushed through algebra questions is now taking time to structure her working, which has led to fewer errors and better marks in class quizzes.

A Year 9 boy, who used to hesitate when stuck, is starting to ask the tutor clarifying questions instead of giving up—a real shift towards independent problem-solving.

In a recent Year 4 session, a student who often avoided homework arrived with it completed and could explain her methods out loud before tackling new material.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Baulkham Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Winston Hills Public School.
