To me, the most important thing a tutor can do is to foster a supportive and positive learning environment. This is because it is important to create a safe and encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and improvements. It is also important for the tutor to tailor the teaching approach to each individual…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. Although understanding a subject is extremely important, I believe the students' willingness to learn is equally important as trying to teach a student to…

Primarily, a tutor needs to be a good listener. Listen the problems of an individual carefully and provide the solution. Tutor can be a mentor not only of the academic but can be a mentor of other emotional and mental problems. Patience is the baby step to become an effective tutor. Some children might need patience levels that may put me through…

Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. I’m patient enough to take care of a children’s work and I can spend more time with him or her to…

The learnings given by a tutor needs to be tailored as per the student.. Every individual is different, has different interests, has different caliber. We need to understand their potential, unlock it and provide our boost to it. I am a very patient person and understand that i may need to repeat my explanations as needed. Sometimes I might need…

A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. I spent most of my adult life abroad as a…

It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I believe that listening to the student is among the most important things a tutor can do. It is imperative that the student feels comfortable to share concepts that they feel unfamiliar with, therefore building a relationship with them is crucial. Having a good understanding of the student's optimal way of learning is also beneficial to the…

A tutor can provide little tips and tricks to answering questions, especially in Math. Always be within reach, in terms of communication platforms, so that the student can clarify any doubts at any point in time. A tutor should also be flexible to the timings of the students yet not compromising on other students schedule. I am patient, clear…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

In my opinion, being a person that students are comfortable with to reach out for help is one of the most important things. A tutor should be there to assist them, not add stress or pressure to them. I also think it is important for tutors to motivate the students to learn, instead of just giving answers, and in motivating them, tutors should be…

My daughter has only had a few sessions with her wonderful tutor and shown improvements already. Her tutor Shan, is kind, patient and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this service.
Karen Montgomery, Woodville South

Inside Woodville SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mia practised expanding and factorising algebraic expressions, then applied these skills to simplify quadratic expressions.

Year 10 student Daniel focused on trigonometric ratios—using sine, cosine, and tangent for right-angled triangles—and worked through applications involving angles of elevation and bearings.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Sarah consolidated her understanding of time calculations alongside division and multiplication strategies using real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student arrived at a session without having attempted the assigned factorisation questions; this led to slower progress during class, as noted: "it is important to do more questions prior to the class to have a more productive session."

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written steps—preferring mental calculation—caused confusion with brackets and negatives, which muddled longer problems.

A senior student in trigonometry left diagrams incomplete, which made angle application tasks harder than needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student's revision relied only on familiar multiplication facts rather than tackling new or challenging types, limiting retention and confidence when new topics appeared.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Woodville South recently noticed a Year 9 student, who used to rush through answers and make avoidable errors, is now talking through each problem out loud and carefully double-checking her steps—she even asked the tutor to check only if she was really stuck.

In a senior session, another student who previously struggled with rationalising expressions was able to simplify complex surds independently after practicing just a few examples.

Meanwhile, one younger learner showed new independence by reading times from an analogue clock on her own, then drawing those times without needing any hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Woodville Primary School.
