To put it simply, I believe the most important things a tutor can do for any student are: -Challenge the student, without overwhelming them -Address the students needs and account for the students individual academic circumstance. -(and quite possibly most importantly) Regularly positively reinforce the student and highlight the student's own…

Help him to go further and improve himself by providing better advice than a classroom teacher. As a tutor, I would be able to focus on my student to understand his strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. With this knowledge the tutor could provide advices focused on how to correct the student and allow him to have better scores easily. I'm…

I consider encouragement, feedback and trust to be an important part of tutoring. The teacher should support the learner to become more confident in their own academic capabilities, giving them timely and accurate feedback. Also, it is just as important to build positive relationships with your students so they can come to you with their problems…

I think that a tutor can help a student in every way. A tutor can allow the student to develop socially, mentally and philosophically. I think i can understand a student's mindset. I know how to teach them in order to let them enjoy their studies. I allow a student to realize his potential and apply that in his…

Encourage them. It is important to make a student feel like they are doing well. Everyone needs encouragement, especially someone who is already struggling. The worst feelings is thinking that you're not good enough, and I strongly believe that as a tutor it is our responsibility to encourage a student to feel like anything is possible. I am…

One of the most important things a teacher can do for their student is to listen. Not to listen to think of the next response but to listen to understand. I believe as a teacher listening specifically to WHAT the student is asking not HOW they are asking it is one of the most valuable and important skills I've learned to develop. When a student is…

Listening to the student, instead of simply talking at the student. Helping the student gain a mindset for actively learning the material and developing confidence in the subject. Lastly, creating a rapport for the student and a good learning environment. My strengths would be an ability to listen to the student and then try approaches that seem…

Education can be extremely enjoyable but, understandably, if students cannot grasp concepts and ideas, they quickly lose interest. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to show their students that learning can actually be fun by teaching them about new ways of thinking. This, in turn, would help them engage in the content of a…

Firstly, tutors can guide the students in their learning and boost their knowledge in areas that they are not confident in or have fallen behind from school. Tutors enhance the student's academic ability so they can perform at their best. Secondly, tutors have the power to motivate and encourage students to keep working hard and not to give up,…

To really understand where the student is coming from. I find that addressing the finer parts that students find more challenging is essential for a tutor. While students may have already covered the concepts in class, the learning process is often not tailored to their individual needs. A tutors role is to adopt a more personalised approach, taking the time to understand each student’s unique level…

I believe a tutor should complement, not replace, teachers and school. Instead, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to take advantage of the time they spend with students individually to identify the core roadblock that prevents their understanding, and then clear it, in a way that teachers, with a class of thirty students,…

Everybody learns differently, and trying to apply the same approach to everyone is going to leave students struggling and frustrated. I adapt my teaching style to the way a student learns, and don't enforce a certain way of thinking - instead, I equip them with the tools to approach any problem in a way that works for them. I have two years'…

Inside Airport WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ava revised solving linear equations involving brackets and multiple x terms, and practiced rearranging equations into y = mx + c for graphing.

In Year 10, Daniel focused on statistics by identifying mean, median, mode, outliers and constructing boxplots using a CAS calculator with real data sets.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Annabelle worked on multiplication tables and applied spelling strategies during reading aloud to strengthen both numeracy and literacy skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, one student struggled with choosing the correct reference frame for projectile motion and occasionally copied calculator answers incorrectly, particularly decimals—"needs to practice being more careful when transcribing answers from the calculator to the paper."

In Year 10 Maths, skipping written steps in algebra meant sign errors went unnoticed until much later.

For a Year 7 student, homework was left incomplete after an illness; this break disrupted his recall of area and perimeter rules during revision.

In primary years, over-reliance on calculators or "rushing" through reading led to misread words or missed grammar cues, leaving comprehension gaps mid-story.

Recent Achievements

One Airport West tutor noticed that a Year 11 student who used to skip steps when simplifying surds is now carefully writing out each stage, which helps him avoid confusion and stay organised through multi-step problems.

In Year 10, another student who often hesitated to check calculator work has started using her intuition to spot errors and will now double-check large calculations independently instead of waiting for guidance.

Meanwhile, in primary school, Annabelle began applying fractions from her lesson to everyday life—before the session ended, she was already describing her lunch in fractions and explaining her thinking unprompted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Essendon Keilor College-Niddrie Campus.
