I believe that each student should be heard in the classroom and encouraged to contribute to discussions. It is important for them to engage in active learning rather than just listening to a teacher speak passively. I find that I can relate to students on a personal level and connect with them through pop culture and references, strengthening…

A good tutor should not only teach students the answers to questions, but also the principles and processes behind the questions. Tutors must have clear communication and explanation skills to ensure students fully understand the course. In addition, it is also very important to give appropriate encouragement to students. Maybe a little…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

Becoming a lifelong role model is crucial in supporting students. Many of them keep their issues hidden, and as adults, we may overlook or avoid addressing these concerns. Some students might not even recognize they have problems. Being a dependable role model and a safe space for them are among the most vital ways to help them. Patience: Having…

I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. In my approach- I want to guide them by building their confidence and helping them step by step through all weaker areas of their academics. I think I am patient…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

Being patient and having an attentive ear so that a student can build confidence in asking questions. Explaining the concepts clearly by adapting to each child's learning style is also important. For me, every student may have a different receptive ability. Therefore, a tutor need to be patient for the first time to understand their students. And then, try to teach them for understanding the whole picture, the fundamentals rather than showing them the ways to solve a particular exercise without any combination with other knowledge. Passion…

The most important thing is to communicate on a level that is with the students so they can understand the topics you are teaching, so they still feel connected and engaged in learning. In addition, also having a variety of strategies as one size does not fit all so it is about finding the best fit for each student. My strength is to provide…

A tutor can listen to the student before giving advice or teaching. Listening is important as it allows a tutor to understand why the student may be having difficulties grasping subjects or topics and choose alternative strategies to help the student. Explaining a topic over and over again often doesn't work and a tutor needs to be open to hearing…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

Empathy, patience, and adaptability. Some tutors don't realise the students don't know as much as them. Tutors need to backtrack their knowledge, retrace the processes that took them there, and impart those vital steps into the students to bridge the gap. It takes time to truly understand the position and needs of students, requiring patience. And…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
