Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. Very closely tied to this is the building of the student, edifying the student if you…

Be patient. Tutors cannot expect students to understand or get the question right the first time. It is important for tutors to understand where the student went wrong and to slowly and easily correct them by following the question. Once they grasped an understanding, tutors should give the student similar questions to practice so they are…

A great tutor is someone who is able to understand and sympathise with a student's situation but is also able to help them learn and achieve higher results. Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student for me is to be able to efficiently teach at a pace comfortable for a student. In terms of my teaching ability, I achieved a…

I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

The most important thing a tutor can do for his/her student is to provide them assistance on topics outside their course as it not only reduces their stress level thus making it easier for students to focus but also at the same time students can relate to the teacher and thus aiding in their understanding. Help a student gain the confidence needed to know what they need to do in studying for a subject, as well as the desire to succeed in that area, knowing that they can with the required commitment. Focusing on what a student needs to most efficiently improve their grade, rather than wasting time, so as to provide the most value possible in a short…

I consider being able know the student's strength and weakness and explain them the topic accordingly to be the most important thing. People have different strengths, weakness and thinking capabilities. Tutors should be able to understand that and make sure that the way they are teaching should not be neither too overwhelming nor too boring/easy…

I believe a tutor is not only a teacher but also a mentor. They are someone for the student to look up to, but also there to help the student develop their understanding through friendship and camaraderie. As they are separate from both school and home settings, they can offer an external and unique perspective on both academic and personal…

In the context of Science and Mathematics, the key aspect is HOW to think. Science requires imagination, innovation as well as an excellent recall and grasp of modern scientific understanding. Mathematics, being a tool - requires the students to be well-equipped with the basic mathematical tools. To directly answer this question; a tutor must…

Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. In my opinion, a tutor can act as the bridge between the student and the learning outcome. I feel the job of a tutor is to instill confidence in the child and inculcate a joy of learning the subject. To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give them a personalised teaching experience. It is crucial that a tutor be patient with students and understanding of their learning background. Create a space of no judgement, there are a lot of questions that students find intimidating to ask in a class environment, so as a tutor, creating a safe space for them to ask those questions is the most important goal to achieve. Inside Allambie HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ethan worked through time calculations involving hours, minutes, and seconds, as well as multiplication and division strategies.

In Year 10, Chloe focused on polynomials by practising polynomial long division and applying the remainder and factor theorems to find roots.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Samuel explored trigonometric identities using step-by-step algebraic proofs and also tackled coordinate geometry questions related to lines and points in the plane.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student hesitated to complete past papers under exam conditions, instead "prematurely checking answers before finishing," which led to less realistic test practice and confusion when grading.

In Year 9 algebra, a student often avoided writing out full steps, especially with minus signs—this made small sign errors hard to spot until the very end.

For a Year 6 learner, slow progress on division was linked to not breaking down numbers into easier chunks or using algorithms, so multi-step calculations took much longer than needed.

When a Year 12 student skipped systematic listing of factor pairs in quadratic problems, it resulted in missed solutions and extra time spent backtracking.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Allambie Heights noticed Fenna, a Year 12 student, now works through even the toughest HSC past papers almost entirely on her own—she used to hesitate and wait for hints but lately checks her answers independently and corrects most mistakes without help.

Filios, also in high school, recently tackled calculus topics he found overwhelming at first; by lesson's end, he could handle all question types with little guidance and started using worked textbook examples as part of his revision routine.

Meanwhile, Jasmine from primary school solved two adult-level logic puzzles by herself after struggling to find entry points just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northern Beaches Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Allambie Heights Public School.
