The imperative role of a tutor is to listen and care for the student's concerns. When you are 1 on 1 with a student, they should feel comfortable to admit the academic challenges they are facing and trust that you are equipped to adapt to their needs. They should look forward to their interactions with you, as if they enjoy the tutoring sessions,…

Previous to having my own children, I loved the confidence building my tutoring has offered and I have had the experiences and joys of their success in their personal journeys from both the students, and their parents. Instilling confidence and therefore motivation for a student is what drives the outcome to their optimal personal success. I have…

I believe it is very important to be as transparent and honest with students as possible, providing them with constructive yet truthful and sincere feedback that will best allow them to grow and refine their work. I also think it is important to stay current in teaching an evolving curriculum and to provide information that aligns with the dynamic…

I believe that the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to understand the individual needs of the student and tailor the tutoring service to them in a way that perfects their understanding. Thus, by being adaptable I feel as if it is the best way to convey the information to students and therefore leading to the most…

As a tutor, you play an important role in a student's mentality towards education. A tutor should aim to correct the "I can't do it" mindset that many students have into an "I can't do it now, but with some guidance and work I will be able to" mindset. But a tutor should also be able to help an already excelling student to achieve higher and to…

The most valuable thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen - listen to their needs, their abilities, and their self-expectancies. Patience will help a tutor rectify weaknesses and mistakes over time and hone in on important skill-building areas. My strengths are that I am kind, patient, and skilled. I would be gentle in guiding the…

A good tutor should be flexible in their teaching techniques for each student, and recognise that individuals learn differently. They should also maintain consistency in certain practices once they…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make sure students feel safe asking questions, help them build confidence, and adapt to their learning styles, supporting them in growing their own way rather than forcing them to conform to one approach. My strengths as a teacher are my patience and my ability to teach multiple subjects and…

One of the most important things that a tutor can do is help instil confidence in students, something I have seen firsthand is just as critical to success as talent and hard work. I would encourage students to go beyond what they believe their academic capabilities are - for example, encouraging the students who I was tutoring for Economics to try…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop a strong sense of confidence in their abilities. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only help them understand topics, but allow the student to gain insight from the tutor's own knowledge of how assignments and school in general functions. It would be a waste for me to not use my experience in VCE, high school and primary school in helping my students learn how…

I consider the following as critical things a tutor can do for a student: - Ability to empathise with the student. This helps with connecting with the students, and creates a safe learning space for them - Ability to listen. In the classroom settings, some teachers are unable to connect with all the students due to the large number and rigid…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make concepts clear, and encourage independent thinking. Allowing them to take an initial step to understanding by themselves, and when they need help, guide them to the right path without completely providing the whole answer. This encourages critical thinking amongst students and shows them that they are capable enough to learn these hard concepts that they may be dealing with. Ultimately, teaching…

It is vital, especially in year 12, for a tutor to unlock a student's full potential in a certain subject, in order to ensure that they perform confidently in their exams, fully knowing that they are doing the best that they can, and have utilized all the available resources. Dedication to a student i.e. going above and beyond to cater to a…

Getting good grades is great, but the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open their mind to new perspectives, and help lead students to a mind of their own. Patience because it is very easy for students to get frustrated when they aren't able to immediately understand a concept. Inside AshburtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emily focused on solving trigonometric equations and interpreting tan graphs, before starting introductory work on combinations and permutations.

Year 10 student Sam worked through financial maths problems including compound interest, then explored the use of transition matrices to model real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Phoebe revised statistics by calculating mean, median, and mode for grouped data in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student often needed extra prompts to start unfamiliar rate and trig graphing questions; "if it was not obvious how to make the triangle, additional prompting was needed." This hesitation slowed progress and meant fewer questions were completed during sessions.

In Year 8 English, one student did not follow their writing plan or think sentences through before starting, which made paragraphs feel disjointed.

For a younger student, forgetting rules for spelling—such as 'ou' versus 'ow'—persisted even after recent revision.

A VCE learner's uncharged laptop limited access to digital notes and disrupted exam preparation in the moment.

Recent Achievements

One Ashburton tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to apply financial maths formulas, started introducing new shortcuts and solving problems more independently.

In another session, a Year 9 student who previously needed lots of prompting was able to tackle simultaneous equations solo once she'd worked through an example together.

Meanwhile, one younger student made clear progress by writing longer sentences and handling harder subtraction questions with minimal help—she now separates her ideas into paragraphs without reminders.

Last week, a high schooler finished every question on their trig worksheet correctly, including those involving horizontal translations.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashburton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Michael's School.
