A tutor can explain the practical applications of the subject he or she teaches in real life. As a tutor I can make my students visualise the concepts which cannot be grasped instantly. I believe that as a tutor I know the potential areas or concepts where students face problems to understand and I am confident to explain the tricky and difficult…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is providing learners with undivided attention, scaffolding their academic journey, imparting life…

They should also be able to keep track of their students' progress and adjust their approach as needed.A successful tutor combines strong subject knowledge with effective communication skills, empathy, adaptability,…

Acoording to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make a positive impact on his life by not forcing the society standards for learning and growing as every child has a different mind and way of approach to things around them. A tutor is one of the best person who can analyse this and make learning a creative activity instead…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them learn in a way they understand. Not everybody learns the same, so it's important that a tutor can help the student no matter what their learning style is. It's also important that a tutor and the student can get along as well, it's easier to listen to a person you like!…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspiring them to keep learning, by giving them "aha" moments when they understand something new. This satisfaction will keep inspiring them to continue learning, which may even turn into a life-long passion. Being able to kick start that process is a tutor's most important role. My…

In the teaching phase, student-focused teaching would be my method of teaching, which is to discover what the students need instead of dumping knowledge, whilst showing respect and understanding. When a student raises concerns about a question, which I assume in maths and sciences usually composites of concepts from multiple areas of study, I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is relate to their learning. A great tutor will adapt their learning styles and pedagogy to frame the student and enable them to learn in the best way possible. For example, you may have several students across the week, yet all of them are different. A great tutor makes an effort in…

Identify where a student is genuinely stuck rather than guessing, then build real understanding instead of rote answers. Much like analysing a workflow to find the key bottleneck, a good tutor pinpoints the obstacle and gives the student confidence to work independently. As said above, I feel tutoring is all about finding the way a student can understand the matter. This means that tutoring for me is in the first place an individual process that differs every time. Also very important is being able to show progress to both the student and the parents because this is the way to build confidence. I am a very…

Imparting an enjoyment of learning something new. I am only with the student for a short time compared to their time in school, so increasing intrinsic motivation to learn has a much greater effect in the long run, as well as decreasing the chance of burnout due to stress in the higher grades. Inside AshgroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 Maddie worked on measuring and drawing angles, including applying the Z and F rules for similar angles, and practiced finding missing angles in diagrams.

In Year 10, Daniel focused on quadratic equations by exploring factorising over the real numbers and using the discriminant to determine solution types.

For Year 12, Sarah tackled integration problems with emphasis on integrating exponential functions and applying the chain rule, while also revising differentiation techniques involving logarithmic scales.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to keep written work neat and clearly labeled during algebra tasks, making it harder to spot calculation errors—Bookwork also needs attention. Labelling questions, and setting out could be neater.

In Year 7, incomplete homework was noted; assigned worksheets on fractions and times tables weren't attempted between lessons, so concepts needed reteaching each week.

For a senior student in Maths Methods, over-reliance on calculator entry led to repeated decimal errors: Frequently missing a zero in small decimals.

A Year 12 Chemistry student delayed error analysis write-up, stalling progress on data interpretation until this step was completed.

Recent Achievements

One Ashgrove tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, who used to hesitate with logarithms and complex problem-solving, was able to complete all the challenging questions correctly and efficiently by the end of their session—something they'd previously found overwhelming.

Another high school student, after missing an entire topic on Earth geometry and time zones, managed to catch up within a single lesson and confidently solved related problems without extra prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger student has started showing more independence by remembering steps for converting fractions and decimals without being reminded, finishing all assigned problems accurately before the session ended.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Finbarr's School.
