The most important thing a tutor can do is being able to explain a concept in a manner which a student can understand. Along with this, I think it is important for a tutor to empower their students, give them confidence, help them reach their goals and improve. Also, to be understanding, patient and flexible with your teaching method, as everyone…

The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. My strengths are my simplistic and analogy-based approach to explaining concepts, and my emphasis on exam technique that allows students to feel…

By being someone the student can rely on, both emotionally and academically, a tutor helps the student stay motivated and willing to tackle challenging material. This steady support builds trust and confidence,…

The key benefit of a tutor is that they can provide individualised support for a student. Tutors have the unique position of being able to become very familiar with their students' understanding of subjects, and employ the most effective strategies to improve their learning. While teachers at students' schools often may not be able to allocate…

From my perspective, a tutor is also a teacher as we teach and deliver knowledge to students. Each student sits at a different level, which requires different tutoring method and approaches. Understanding is key in tutoring as adequate assistance would help a student to achieve their best potentials. Secondly, we as tutoring should make students…

A tutor should be there to support the student through all academic struggles they are facing and help the student reach all their academic goals. The tutor should be familiar with their students learning style and preferences, then adjust their tutoring to suit. I believe that is to impart the knowledge he/she has to the student about a certain subject, in such way and manner that is very considerate to the mental and emotional well-being and capacity of the student. It is important tutors: - When possible, teach the material in a way that allows students to 'see the forest through the trees' in order for them to more effectively engage in the important details. - Teach in a way that allows for active, intuitive learning, rather than passive rote memorization. - Make students feel like they are part of a…

Local Reviews

Efficiency in obtaining a face to face tutor.
guydobson, Balmain

Inside BalmainTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Josh reviewed financial maths concepts like taxable income and revised coordinate geometry, including transformations on the number plane.

Year 9 Malissa practised writing speeches for English based on A Midsummer Night's Dream and worked through trigonometry problems using bearings.

For Year 8 Tom, recent sessions included algebraic equations revision ahead of a test and practice with area calculations for rectangles and triangles, often using diagrams to reinforce methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was unable to specify what topics would be on her upcoming maths assessment, which limited targeted revision and left her less prepared—"in the future she really needs to know this because then we can do revision directly on the topics that she will be tested on."

In Year 9 English, another student's essay drafts lacked structure and clear topic sentences; over-description replaced use of language techniques.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student repeatedly zoned out during maths lessons, making it harder to retain new formulas for surface area and volume.

Missed opportunities for focused practice and feedback resulted in lingering uncertainty before tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Balmain noticed a big shift with one Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started actively asking questions during sessions and made real progress interpreting graphs on her own.

In Year 9, another student who used to rely heavily on hints for simultaneous equations began catching and correcting mistakes without prompting, especially when working through algebra problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student known for second-guessing himself surprised everyone by finishing an entire worksheet independently—only pausing to double-check his answers at the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Birchgrove Public School.
