Imparting information is an important part of being a tutor, but modelling curiosity, a genuine love of learning and knowledgem and above all showing others what it looks like to be passionate about the at or discipline is as important. They must be able to relate to the student's situation and current understanding of topics/content. This is the only way tutors can identify what student's need to work and create methods for them to see real improvement. I am attentive and understanding of each student's personal situation and needs, thereby helping me teach them at the correct…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. Although raising marks is the main objective for tutors, they must be able to interact with the students and find their weak points and there is a limit to what they can teach. They must act as a pillar that can support their…

The most important I as a tutor can do is to accept that each student has a different way of learning and I should adapt and blend their teaching methods according to the student, there's no one size fits all method for everyone. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make themselves welcoming. A good and effective tutor is open to all ideas and willing to completely work with the student. The most effective tutors will offer a variety of perspectives and welcome all criticism and differing opinions. During school, I struggled with breaking down tasks,…

I believe the best thing a tutor can do is to inspire confidence and a deep appreciation for lifelong learning in the student. Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build confidence and self-esteem. Often, people feel discouraged or left out when unable to keep up with their class. I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

As a tutor's job is to be supplementary to a students learning, the most vital role a tutor can fulfill is to be sympathetic and understanding to a student's situation, and to be adaptive in the way they assist the student in order to maximise their potential. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence to tackle questions by themselves. I would consider skills such as organisation, critical thinking and problem solving strategies to be the most valuable takeaways for the student, especially since the skills will always be useful long-term. Audrey, Balmain

Inside Balmain EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlie reviewed mean, median, mode and tackled Interquartile Range, then moved on to constructing and interpreting box plots using recent test questions.

Year 9 student Emma practised solving simultaneous equations and reinforced her understanding of algebraic equations through targeted problem sets.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ava focused on compound interest calculations and depreciation problems in maths, working through real-world scenarios for extra clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled with reading worded geometry questions fully, leading to missed key details—"she is still struggling picturing the different scenarios from the word questions," noted a tutor.

In Year 11, failure to plan and condense history notes led to either excess information or critical gaps when revising for assessments.

For Year 8 algebra, skipping steps in rearranging equations hid sign errors and slowed progress.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student repeatedly forgot multiplication tables during fraction work, causing frustration mid-task and slowing confidence growth when tackling more complex problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Balmain East noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who had previously missed key details in algebra questions; she now checks each problem more carefully and rarely skips important information.

In Year 8 maths, another student moved from confusion with multi-step percentage problems to independently solving even the longest ones without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once hesitated to read aloud tackled Level 11 and 12 books solo this week, finishing them with no help and even attempting the next level up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nicholson Street Public School.
