Working in a suitable environment allows the student to perform at a higher performance. This includes bonding with the student and encouraging them whenever possible, providing positive reinforcement. Another important thing is…

I consider that the most important thing that you can do for a student is help them to see the use of the things that they are learning and make them understand why it is important to learn these things. Helping them to develop love for the subject, and this way it will be easier for them to develop a love for study in general. I think that my…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student develop genuine understanding and confidence rather than simply providing answers. A good tutor should be patient, listen to the student's individual needs, and adapt their teaching approach accordingly. I come from a background of struggling a lot my self and have used…

The important things a tutor can do for their students include making the subject enjoyable and empowering students to reach a point from where they can arrive at solutions on their own. The first and foremost task for tutors is to make the subject more enjoyable than what the students perceive it to be. Once the students start enjoying the…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. Beyond just solving problems or improving grades, my goal is to help students truly believe in their own abilities. Many students struggle not because they lack potential, but because they doubt themselves. I work to change that. By…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapt and be patient. Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their goals. The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

While obviously a tutor is paid to help a student improve their grades or help them study, a tutor that is able to give a student an actual interest in the subject matter is one of the best things a tutor can do. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe they are capable. A lot of students have already decided they are bad at the subject, so rebuilding that confidence comes first. From there it is about helping them understand the thinking behind an answer, not just the answer itself. If they only memorise a method they…

I believe the most important aspect of being a tutor is to be able to tailor the teaching to the needs of the students. Some students might be ahead of the initial plan and some may fall behind, it is crucial for us to help them get on the right track and make sure that everyone understands the concepts for their level or further. As an usyd…

Audrey, Balmain

Inside Balmain EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlie reviewed mean, median, mode and tackled Interquartile Range, then moved on to constructing and interpreting box plots using recent test questions.

Year 9 student Emma practised solving simultaneous equations and reinforced her understanding of algebraic equations through targeted problem sets.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ava focused on compound interest calculations and depreciation problems in maths, working through real-world scenarios for extra clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled with reading worded geometry questions fully, leading to missed key details—"she is still struggling picturing the different scenarios from the word questions," noted a tutor.

In Year 11, failure to plan and condense history notes led to either excess information or critical gaps when revising for assessments.

For Year 8 algebra, skipping steps in rearranging equations hid sign errors and slowed progress.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student repeatedly forgot multiplication tables during fraction work, causing frustration mid-task and slowing confidence growth when tackling more complex problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Balmain East noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who had previously missed key details in algebra questions; she now checks each problem more carefully and rarely skips important information.

In Year 8 maths, another student moved from confusion with multi-step percentage problems to independently solving even the longest ones without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once hesitated to read aloud tackled Level 11 and 12 books solo this week, finishing them with no help and even attempting the next level up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nicholson Street Public School.
