I believe a tutor should be a role model for the students and encourage him/her on their academic journey. I have found that many times students don't have proper guidance in regards to academics, hence they develop this stigma that they are not smart enough. As a tutor my role is to encourage the students to not only do better in school but also…

A tutor must be able to approach problems/concepts in different ways until they find the best way that the kid understands. Teachers have method that suit the whole class, whereas tutors must be able to look deeper into the specific areas a kid is struggling in and answer their questions that take longer and more practice. Tutors must be able to…

A tutor needs to provide support and consideration of a student's abilities, and empower the student to achieve beyond what they think they can achieve. In particular, for younger students, I believe that tutors can and will help to lay the foundational stones that will provide the driving force to empower students to their best. Even if a…

Most importantly, putting time and efforts after students till their basics are clear is the key for a tutor to use. After clearing the basics, revising and revisiting the already done work is equally important. Having had experience in tutoring, patience is my strength. I think self motivation and hard work are the key to success while mentoring…

I believe it is motivating and teaching the student how to get the most out of their time studying in and outside of their tutoring session. Not only will this mean they learn more but Increasing ones ability to learn means the student will enjoy studying more (as if feels like they're making progress). 1. When teaching it is important to post assess the students understanding after the lesson was completed. 2. Mistakes should be promptly identified and corrected. 3. It is important to genuinely praise the students efforts , answers in the session as it helps to build confidence. 4. Should be able to adopt accordingly to each student. 5.…

Listening. I think the best thing a tutor/mentor can do is listen to their students to find out which subjects/areas that need to be focused on. I believe the most important thing is to allow the student to share the same passion and interest for the subject, since that is the biggest factor for inciting motivation within the student to keep going. I am very patient, so if a student isn't fully understanding a topic even after multiple explanations, I wouldn't get frustrated, but instead…

I think there are two main things a tutor can do for a student; maintain high grades and garner a positive attitude. It is imperative as a tutor's job to help the student maintain or achieve high grades in the particular area of study. However, high academic standards are not simply enough. It is also important for a tutor to build up an…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to learn alongside them. This inspires and encourages a student to be themselves and ask questions openly. To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

Help and guide them in reaching their goals. Understanding the subject instead of scoring marks by byhearting. Support them not only in the subject knowledge but also in their social life. Local Reviews

It was easy to get started on Maths tutoring for my son. I registered interest online and received a phone call soon afterwards. I advised my requirements and received a text from our new tutor within a few days. We have had one session so far. I was impressed by how knowledgeable the tutor was, and how relevant she made the session to my sons needs.

Inside Balwyn NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie practised simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting fractions using number lines for visual support.

In Year 8, Olivia explored concepts of percentages as well as GST and discounts, applying these to real-world scenarios.

For a Year 11 student, Daniel worked through integration by substitution and recognition methods, focusing on how to approach related SAC questions with extended mathematical reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to attempt harder algebra problems, tending to focus on familiar questions; as the tutor noted, "she circled back to easy equations instead of tackling the more challenging ones." This meant less progress with complex substitution and balancing tasks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student often skipped writing out full working when applying ratios or unpacking redox titration questions—errors in calculation crept in unnoticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 Maths student leaned heavily on their calculator for trigonometric simplifications but missed opportunities to strengthen mental fluency; this slowed problem-solving under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Balwyn North tutor recently saw a Year 9 student who used to hesitate when solving equations now confidently add and subtract terms on both sides to isolate x, tackling problems without prompting.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student who previously struggled with trig identities managed to simplify fractions using trigonometric rules and successfully differentiate inverse trig functions for the first time.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had been guessing at shapes began accurately naming polygons with more than four sides and even transformed numerical digits into English up to 999 without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bede's School.
