A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. They should try to help the student gain passion and curiosity for the concepts they learn. This will help them study and ace the subject. Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. I am aware of different styles of learning…

Inside BarangarooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Ava focused on advanced trigonometry by reviewing her recent test and then moved on to polynomials, tackling chapter exercises and logs.

Year 10 student Tom worked through several lessons on quadratics and linear relations, with sessions dedicated to solving worded problems using algebraic methods.

For a Year 3 primary student, time was spent practising addition and subtraction strategies as well as developing reading comprehension skills through short passages.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student repeatedly avoided writing full working for rearranging equations—"she said, 'I just get stuck at the start,' and would hesitate to begin unless prompted."

In a senior English assignment, another left their TEEL structure incomplete and was reluctant to link arguments back to topic sentences, resulting in an unfinished draft.

A Year 11 student struggled with domain and range because revision focused only on familiar problems rather than tackling new question types; this left them underprepared for tests requiring flexible thinking.

After setbacks, confidence dropped sharply and questions went unasked, making progress slower than expected.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Barangaroo recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started tackling circle geometry questions on her own and now attempts problems independently before asking for help.

In a Year 12 session, Martina made real progress—she stopped relying on example solutions and now remembers formulas well enough to solve algebraic fraction questions without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously stumbled over reading tasks managed to read an entire short paragraph aloud and explain its meaning without assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fort Street Public School.
