The most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe that they can achieve their goals in a particular subject. Motivation and self-efficacy are key to academic success and I believe that tutors especially can foster these in their students. My strengths as a tutor are my dedication to and passion for education. I have an extremely…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to help improve their confidence with subjects, not just by helping them with homework but by guiding them to the tools necessary to succeed. I believe that my strengths as a tutor are my ability to listen to students and to break down complicated tasks into achievable steps. I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is get them to enjoy or at least engage more with a subject they may be struggling with. Proving new angles and fresh insight is one of the best ways to do that. I also think providing students with an internal motivation can be very helpful (getting them to engage with their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure there is continual improvement in their work. If there are signs the student is not improving, then it's important to look for weaknesses or anything the student is struggling with and work on those areas. I know at uni, and when I was at school, the feeling of understanding…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is instead of just making them rote learn and score good marks, make the understand the topic completely in such a way which would be way more beneficial to the students as compared to rote learning. A tutor must be patient and listen to how the student feels and explains their material. Without this we can't understand where the gaps are in the students knowledge OR whether they really do understand, but just in a different way. I have infinite patience, I can adjust my communication style, and I when faced with something unfamiliar I have…

Young people respond to humour, warmth and positivity. A large part of a students educational experience is the connection made it the educator. Acoording to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make a positive impact on his life by not forcing the society standards for learning and growing as every child has a different mind and way of approach to things around them. A tutor is one of the best person who can analyse this and make learning a creative activity instead…

I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

I feel it is important to recognise what the student is looking to get out of the tutoring experience. I believe that if a tutor is kind, patient and shows respect, they will see greater results with their students. In order for effective learning, it is paramount to create a distraction-free, positive environment, and prepare well-thought out lessons ahead of time. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, I think that if a tutor is ready to motivate,…

it Is really important to sit down with the mentee and work out what they want and what you can give. We are very happy with the tutoring and our tutor is very good with my children. They are really enjoying it and this speaks volumes as they were both very opposed to the idea!

Inside BardonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Oskar worked on algebra and number patterns using his Year 5 Maths Resource book, with extra practice set for homework.

A Year 7 student used real-world Kokoda Challenge event data to calculate average speeds between checkpoints, applying rate and time calculations in a practical context.

For a Year 10 student, recent lessons included probability concepts, normal distribution curves, and an introduction to derivatives and exponential distributions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, skipping the habit of back-checking led to "a few minor errors which checking could easily fix," especially when fractions were involved.

A Year 11 student tackling derivatives sometimes began new questions before finishing previous ones, causing confusion and unfinished working.

In upper primary, homework in multiplication was occasionally left incomplete or not attempted with pencil and paper, despite reminders.

For a Year 8 word problem set, rushing to answer before fully understanding the question resulted in misinterpreted tasks; as one tutor observed, "he needs to work on fully understanding what a question is asking before attempting it."

Recent Achievements

One Bardon tutor noted a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess through division questions now talks aloud while working, and has started double-checking answers with pencil and paper—something he'd never done before.

In Year 8 maths, another student who often avoided larger worded problems has begun breaking them into steps using new strategies, showing clear independence in tackling multi-part questions.

A Year 4 learner, previously hesitant with subtraction, now solves bigger addition and subtraction tasks out loud, explaining her thinking as she works. Last week she completed her homework without any reminders or prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
