The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their behaviour towards learning, which will help assist in getting them to learn and grow as a student. As a tutor I will go the extra mile for them as long as they are willing to go the extra mile with me in terms of learning and practicing. My strength is my patience and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and personable with the student. Tutoring is very different from a school environment, in that the benefits that exist are going at a pace that is suitable to the student's needs. Tutors are understanding and can target specific difficulties in a student's learning. We also not only identify…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is instead of providing answers, ask the students open-ended questions that guide the students to the conclusion themselves. Lecturing about the topic may work for some, but to others, the content is easily disposable/forgotten or the student has mentally checked out halfway through the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure their student comes out with the confidence and competence required of a diligent learner. A tutor should not only mechanically explain and teach knowledge to a student - they should accomodate for the student's own learning needs, explain questions in a digestible, easy way and ensure the…

I think some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student involve listening and understanding where they're really struggling to be able to help them effectively. This also includes explaining terms or topics not just in the textbook way, but with examples or analogies that would make sense to them. Being patient is also extremely…

Show commitment, whether its through showing up on time, or taking some of your spare time at home to mark their work. Also to support and encourage the individual to achiever their very best. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence in their own ability. It's not just about getting the right answer, but helping them understand how to approach problems and trust their thinking. When students feel supported and capable, they’re much more willing to engage and improve. I think one of my main…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel heard. Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

Inside Bass HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Alessandro worked on turning improper fractions into mixed numbers and solved word problems involving basic operations.

Year 7 student Sarah focused on linear equations, including solving for unknowns and representing relationships using graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Daniel revised trigonometric ratios to find unknown sides in right-angled triangles and practiced applying bearings in real-world navigation scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student's written work was flagged as "presentation of answers needed improvement"—for example, omitting brackets when multiplying negatives led to confusion and reworking.

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a calculator for basic index laws, which masked underlying gaps ("efficiency in using calculator is a plus," but errors persisted when the calculator wasn't available).

In Year 3 maths, another student struggled to keep working neat and often misplaced digits when carrying over in multi-digit addition; this slowed down problem-solving and sometimes resulted in repeated corrections rather than steady progress.

Recent Achievements

One Bass Hill tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who used to stay quiet during lessons—this week, he asked questions proactively, instead of guessing and moving on.

A Year 11 student had struggled with factorising non-monic equations but, after several sessions, was able to work through them independently and even explained her method out loud.

Meanwhile, in primary school maths, one student who'd hesitated over mixed fractions before is now confidently adding them with the same denominator and even picked up improper fractions without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bass High School.
