I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide support and help them develop independence in their learning. A tutor should guide students to understand concepts by encouraging them to think critically and problem-solve on their own. It is also important to help students enjoy learning and develop the resilience to…

The assistance for gaining problem solving ability allows the student to solve about 50% of the task and remaining 50% comes with practice. Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

The ability to explain concepts and solutions to problems in a way that the student can understand. What can look very simple to us can seem like a foreign language to our students, so the skill to break these down and make the student believe that what just looked impossible to them is actually very doable is invaluable as a tutor. Establishing…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him different things while motivating the student and making sure he/she/they understand the essence of the teaching so that they can apply it in daily life rather than asking them to memorize different things. This way the students not only get good grades but also store whatever…

Being patient and understanding. I would not want my students to just meet more deadlines when it comes to learning. A tutor should also have a good understanding of the topics that they are supposed to teach, and should also be willing to adapt to ways of teaching because every student is not the same and one key cannot open all locks. A tutor should be able to build confidence for a student in a subject that is not their strongest. By building this confidence, students can go into exams with a clear understanding of the subject. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is make difficult concepts feel easier and less overwhelming for a student. Very happy Mehak is very good and is doing a great job.
Mark, Bayswater

Inside BayswaterTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Lily worked on adding and subtracting negative numbers within algebraic equations, then practiced ratio problems including worded questions from her textbook.

Year 11 student Lola focused on quadratics—specifically solving quadratic equations and discussing properties of a parabola—and also reviewed simultaneous equations.

Another Year 11 student, Emily, practiced using trigonometric functions to find unknown lengths or angles in triangles and tackled problem-solving with SOHCAHTOA strategies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly arrived without completed homework or up-to-date schoolwork, leaving gaps in revision and making it difficult to check progress; "no classwork or homework notes provided from previous lectures nor progress report shown," one tutor noted.

In Year 7 mathematics, cramped, unstructured working made following algebraic steps confusing—lost train of thought led to mistakes that could have been avoided with clearer layout.

Meanwhile, a senior economics student missed key concepts because they focused only on current diagrams instead of revising earlier basics like elasticity calculations. Without these habits, crucial feedback was missed and foundational errors repeated.

Recent Achievements

One Bayswater tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to spot her own errors in maths, started catching and correcting mistakes on her own during problem-solving—something she'd never attempted before.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 boy who previously only answered questions when prompted now asks for clarification whenever unsure and recently worked through some tricky simultaneous equations almost entirely independently.

In primary, a Year 4 student who often left spelling tasks unfinished surprised everyone by finishing all her homework on time and acing a surprise spelling test without extra help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayswater Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bayswater Primary School.
