To develop critical thinking and a problem solving attitude in a student so that they can themselves breakdown a complex question into easier, doable sections to reach to the solution. This will help the student to clarify their concepts without the tutor directly providing them with the solution but instead leading them through a simplified…

I believe tutors exist to help extend the foundations of what students are taught in schools, whether it be through analysing old concepts with a finer view or reinforcing newer concepts with carefully selected examples and analogies. I believe I am quite capable of exercising patience when a student is trying to understand the subject, trying to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build a strong one-to-one connection to find key strengths and/or weaknesses that the student is facing. Then work together to improve these skills. I am a patient and adaptable tutor who has worked with a range of kids previously. I am also able to remain professional as well as…

A good tutor should be several things. They are an accountability partner, a mentor in the area the student wishes to improve in, and they are also a source of inspiration for the student. Doing a couple questions in the lesson but not finishing the rest of the homework is not good enough. It is a huge success for a tutor to be able to encourage…

As simple as it may sound, the most crucial duty a tutor must do is teach and not just teach the simple topic, but to face it with a vast amount of understanding and various methods. In fact, learning multiple ways to approach a problem will assure a robust understanding of the subject. I strongly believe that making the student focus and tackle…

The best thing I believe is to help student realize their ability in learning mathematics. I consider the shift from teacher-centered teaching to learner-centered learning is essential. I will try to help my students solve the problem by themselves by giving hints rather than straight up giving them the answer. As student gains success in solving…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do is be proactive when carrying out their tasks and roles. A tutor must adapt to the strengths of a student. Different students have different ways of understanding concepts. For example, some need written explanations and some are comfortable with verbal explanations. Keeping this is mind is key to helping a student. Also, it is very important for a tutor to make a student comfortable enough for…

Being patient. A lot of teachers get frustrated when students do not understand concepts the way they teach them. It is important to teach every student in their own way and be patient with the teaching process. Otherwise a student's confidence and motivation to learn is harmed. To ignite the students interest in a subject and help the student to do their best in a subject. By helping a student understand certain topics within a subject can lead to them finding an unknown passion within the subject. Us tutors can have the merit in sparking and driving the interest. I value tutors as being mentors who students look up to for advice and as a role model, whilst revealing a students' true potential which in turn improves self-confidence and self-esteem. For instance, I think the evolving of students' enjoyment towards subjects, even ever so slightly, is one of the most valuable things an inspiring and supportive…

Make sure the student has the right attitude towards studying and enjoying as well. I personally think enjoying what you are doing is the most important. From my experience, It is way easier to learn and memorize the things you like. Forcing the student to do something worsens the attitude and possibly the grade as well. I think my biggest…

A tutor should be patient when a student is experiencing difficulties understanding the topic. When a student does not appear to be actively engaged, the tutor should take the initiative to support them. Finally, a tutor should be excellent at explaining difficult concepts to students. A tutor should, first and foremost, be amicable and trustworthy to students. This means that students should be able to confide in their tutors in the event that they are struggling to grasp matter, and, no matter how many times they ask, the tutor should provide the necessary assistance. The tutor chosen for my daughter connected with her at the first lesson and has made the idea of being tutored a positive experience. Which I very grateful for. I gave you 1 star less as I had difficulty in trying to pay for one of the prepaid packages.

Inside BeecroftTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Hamish worked on classifying numbers, as well as converting decimals to fractions and identifying multiples and factors.

For Year 10, Ella focused on measurement questions involving absolute and percentage error, then moved to linear graphs—finding gradients and y-intercepts using examples from her textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Arish tackled challenging complex number problems alongside some proof questions set by his school teacher.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student was observed "cramming all homework into one sitting," resulting in rushed responses and gaps when tackling advanced topics like polynomials and logarithms. This left little room for meaningful revision or feedback use before lessons.

In Year 10, a student repeatedly relied on the formula sheet for trigonometry instead of memorising key relationships—"he kept checking the sheet each time rather than recalling the rule."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner skipped reading full word problems, leading to frequent misinterpretation: answers often missed key details from later sentences. This tendency undermined their confidence when faced with multi-step questions in class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Beecroft recently noted a Year 11 student who previously hesitated with exam techniques now independently pinpoints her weaker areas and applies new strategies to tackle them.

In Year 8 maths, one student who often guessed when stuck has started pausing to ask clarifying questions instead, showing real initiative and less reliance on luck.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled with measuring lines using a ruler was initially apprehensive but, after some hands-on practice, now confidently measures and compares lengths without prompting. Last session, he completed all his line measurement tasks smoothly on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pennant Hills Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beecroft Public School.
