The most important thing is to give the students better clarity than when they first joined the session. I have a very logical approach to teaching my specialty subjects, taking methodical and incremental learning steps to ensure the session is successful. In addition, by focusing on student comprehension, I make sure that the student does not…

I believe a tutor can do for a student is to help them in any possible way. I have worked as a private tutor and I believe that there are a wide range of things a tutor can do for a student. First is to be able to teach well and not be too harsh on the student as it creates discouragement. Being able to communicate and be patient will allow the…

I believe tutors have the potential to really change a students attitude and opinion of school, a great tutor will not only teach a subject but teach a student to enjoy the subject through sharing with the student the things that make the subject enjoyable to them, and this has the potential to totally change a students academic life. I have been…

Identifying the best technique to teach the student is the best thing a tutor can do. Students learn much faster when they are taught according to their methods of learning. Identifying the right technique to teach will lead to the student identifying the perfect technique to study in the presence or absence of a tutor. I have had enough…

I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allow the student to see that they are so much more than their grades, but also giving them the tools they need to succeed academically, because at the end of the day, their grades will play a big part in the options they will have for future studies. I feel my biggest strength would be my…

A tutors most important role is to support and empower students in their learning journey. I would consider skills such as organisation, critical thinking and problem solving strategies to be the most valuable takeaways for the student, especially since the skills will always be useful long-term. I also think a tutor should be able to build up their student's growth mindset, giving the students the mentality and confidence to grow even…

Communicate, as I believe the reason most student turn to tutoring services is due to a lack of proper communication from usual teachers leading to them misunderstanding or lacking knowledge in certain areas of a subject. What do you consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student? Making sure that all of my student's questions are answered before the end of the lesson is one of the most important things in tutoring in my opinion. Asking question is the best way of learning and therefore answering question is the best way of teaching.…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

Inside Bellevue HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex focused on NAPLAN reading comprehension and tackled worded mathematics problems, practising how to break down questions step by step.

In Year 9, Sophie worked through her recent algebra test, revisiting factorisation methods and consumer arithmetic with extra practice examples for clarity.

For Year 10, James reviewed surface area and volume formulas for an upcoming assessment, then identified gaps in his understanding of foundational maths concepts from previous years.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Mathematics sometimes "needed help to get the final answer finished fully or total correctly," as one tutor noted, especially when working through polynomial roots—often, a lack of regular review led to gaps during complex exercises.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student faced challenges with factorising quadratics but would become flustered and start guessing rather than methodically reworking steps when under pressure.

In Year 4 English sessions, frequent distraction and an urge to quickly guess answers in spelling tasks meant key concepts were missed, leaving gaps that resurfaced during reading aloud.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bellevue Hill noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle HSC-style differentiation questions now initiates each part independently, only asking for help on the final steps.

In another high school session, a student who often second-guessed her answers with expanding binomials completed every problem without errors and checked her work confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student—who last term would skip challenging reading words—now stops to sound out tricky vocabulary aloud before moving on, showing clear initiative in decoding new texts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waverley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bellevue Hill Public School.
