I think the most important thing is to be encouraging and make sure they know how much you believe in them. I think that once you believe you can you are basically halfway there I'm kind and incredibly patient! I was also a very visual learner so didn't quite get the approach most teachers took at school. Particularly year 11 and 12 I had to find…

A tutor needs to be extremely patient and understanding, the student needs you to help take all of that away for them. Making your student feel comfortable enough that they can ask you the same question multiple times without being made to feel silly or inadequate. Learning to adapt on the spot to meet each students needs is also extremely…

Through this, I believe that I'm setting students up for future success by showing them how exciting and engaging learning is, and the study skills necessary to pursue this. But more importantly,…

I believe that the most important things which a tutor can do for a student are these: to stress the need for forward planning and for regular timetables; to encourage where necessary; to break down large tasks into manageable portions; and to clarify hitherto obscure matters. I think that my strengths as a tutor are these: I've shown that I can…

Understanding each and every student is essential as all students don't operate on the same frequency. According to me even though tutoring is taught in class of numerous students, it is more of a one is to one relationship rather than one is to n. Hence, Understanding students and diagnosing them accordingly, with regard to their individual…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student would be, firstly helping the student develop understandings of the subject at a fundamental level and then building up to a mastery from there. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them a sense of confidence when they return the classroom after having something explained to them in a way they can understand. Ideally the end goal a tutor should have is for a student to be able to understand concepts in a subject by themselves, without the explanation of a tutor.…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. Building their confidence and making it genuinely okay to be wrong. So many kids are terrified of giving the wrong answer, and that fear holds them back way more than the actual material does. If I can be a space where they feel safe enough to make mistakes and try again without embarrassment, that's going to do a lot more for them in the long run…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

Inside BentleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anna practised converting between fractions and decimals as well as solving measurement problems involving area.

For Year 8, Tom focused on graphing linear relations and working through equations and inequalities using real-life examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia revised trigonometric relationships by connecting sine, cosine, and tangent values with angles, alongside applying the Pythagoras' theorem to a variety of questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left out written working in algebra, as noted: "need practise showing 'working' when solving any mathematical problems," which led to hidden errors and slower correction.

In Year 10 trigonometry, confusion between values and angles persisted—"easy to get distracted most of the time"—especially with radians.

A younger student repeatedly forgot the multiplication tables during fraction work, making even basic calculations slow.

For several sessions, a Year 7 did not bring required materials like textbooks or exercise books; this meant missed practice opportunities and incomplete follow-up on geometry concepts discussed in lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Bentleigh tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who'd always hesitated to speak up when stuck with algebra now confidently asks clarifying questions before attempting problems—something she never did last term.

In another session, a Year 11 student who previously made frequent errors graphing trigonometric equations managed to solve and graph each type correctly on her own, only double-checking answers at the end.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often mixed up fractions and decimals is now reliably converting percentages to fractions without prompting and can explain each step aloud as he works.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Paul's School.
