Establish the appropriate attitude towards studying. A tutor, besides supporting their student academically at the moment, should be able to build the learning culture by stimulating the student's curiosity and appreciation towards the subject and studying as a whole. I'm a good communicator and I can simplify complex concepts in a…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the students' confidence, help them develop problem-solving skills, and create a safe space where they feel supported. A tutor should guide the students to become more independent and motivated in their learning, not just help with answers. I'm very patient and encouraging, which…

I think a safe environment is one of the most important things I can provide as a tutor. Creating a safe environment can make learning fun, keeping the student engaged with the content and while improving. My creativity is…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, build confidence, and foster a love for learning. First, a tutor should simplify complex concepts and explain them in ways that make sense to the student. It’s about making the subject less intimidating and more approachable. Second, building the…

I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

I think that helping a student understand the basic concept of what they are learning to ensure that they have a strong foundation for future learning. This may lead to a new appreciation for the subject matter. As well as ensuring that no student remains behind their year level to develop more nuanced future adults. I believe that I am able to…

Inside Bentleigh EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Poppy practised division strategies and reviewed perimeter concepts using her school homework as a base.

In Year 8, Max focused on simplifying algebraic fractions and solving simultaneous equations, including work with partial fractions for deeper understanding.

Ava, in Year 10, revised key skills in fractions and percentages to prepare for an upcoming test, concentrating on converting between the two forms and applying them to worded problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student began to lose track of his books and submitted late homework, especially as division and times tables were set for practice; as one tutor noted, "he's starting to forget to organise his books neatly and orderly."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on VCE Maths struggled with clarity in written working—steps were rushed or left off when using the CAS calculator, which led to confusion in vector questions.

In a Year 5 session, a lack of confidence meant Ava hesitated to start fraction addition unless prompted, slowing her progress during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Bentleigh East tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip homework now completes every task and even asks for harder practice questions, showing real initiative.

In Year 8 maths, a student who previously hesitated with decimals has started working through decimal problems independently and timed himself on practice sets to push his speed.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who would quietly guess at answers before, now talks through her problem-solving steps out loud—especially when tackling tricky multiplication—and finished all her worded questions quickly without any help this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Valkstone Primary School.
