The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them self-confidence in their ability to study. When I was in high school, I lacked self confidence and it automatically hindered the degree of understanding that I developed for the subject. However, after a few tutoring sessions, my tutor empowered me. He gave me the confidence to…

Be able to help them understand topics they can not. Always be happy to answer questions. Communication, I break down complicated topics so they are easier to understand. Patience, as I find sometimes tutors can be impatient with students that do not understand the topic straight away. Interpersonal skills as…

Having patience, I feel, is crucial to success, as I believe a student will eventually understand what they are required to do, and having a short patience will only increase the length it takes for a student to understand. However, whilst patience is important, it is neccesary to keep a progessive, developing mindset with students, so that there…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence they need to sit an exam and believe that they have the skills required to answer the questions in front of them. I have had a number of students come to me with issues relating to this, along the lines of 'I just had no idea what to do.' I aim to equip my students…

Be patient and listen. When a student is struggling or not fully grasping a topic, the last thing they need is a tutor who is going to get angry or annoyed if they haven't understood what they are trying to teach. I believe being patient and readjusting your approach is so much more important than just trying to force upon exam questions and…

It is vital, especially in year 12, for a tutor to unlock a student's full potential in a certain subject, in order to ensure that they perform confidently in their exams, fully knowing that they are doing the best that they can, and have utilized all the available resources. Dedication to a student i.e. going above and beyond to cater to a…

I believe in having a proper conversation everyday with the child. So that, we can understand the gaps in their understanding and improve them in the areas that they are lagging behind. A teacher should give them regular tips on how to perform some tasks that they find it tough and keep encouraging them and be patient enough to bring out the…

Inside Bentleigh EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Poppy practised division strategies and reviewed perimeter concepts using her school homework as a base.

In Year 8, Max focused on simplifying algebraic fractions and solving simultaneous equations, including work with partial fractions for deeper understanding.

Ava, in Year 10, revised key skills in fractions and percentages to prepare for an upcoming test, concentrating on converting between the two forms and applying them to worded problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student began to lose track of his books and submitted late homework, especially as division and times tables were set for practice; as one tutor noted, "he's starting to forget to organise his books neatly and orderly."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on VCE Maths struggled with clarity in written working—steps were rushed or left off when using the CAS calculator, which led to confusion in vector questions.

In a Year 5 session, a lack of confidence meant Ava hesitated to start fraction addition unless prompted, slowing her progress during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Bentleigh East tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip homework now completes every task and even asks for harder practice questions, showing real initiative.

In Year 8 maths, a student who previously hesitated with decimals has started working through decimal problems independently and timed himself on practice sets to push his speed.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who would quietly guess at answers before, now talks through her problem-solving steps out loud—especially when tackling tricky multiplication—and finished all her worded questions quickly without any help this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Valkstone Primary School.
