I believe the most important asset a physics tutor can have is the ability to listen. Student's often come to tutors with different intentions in mind, some to extend their current knowledge and accelerate themselves, while others intend to re-establish their foundations. It is crucial that the tutor listens to and understands the students needs…

I believe it is just as important to be an encouraging and steady influence - building confidence and dispelling fears - as it is to impart knowledge and study skills. I pay attention to the factors that influence how a student learns best, and apply those to each individual circumstance. As a high achiever who has earned degrees in several…

A tutor should be able to personalise and adapt to each and every student. Everyone learns at different paces and styles and I think it's most important to understand a students strengths and weaknesses. I would like to say that I am a very patient person, ready for any challenge and obstacle. I also have experience from young children in Years 1…

A tutor is there both to teach content and to improve a student's study habits. Seeking advice from teachers, peers, and my past tutor, I have developed helpful study skills and I recognise inefficient habits. I have gained an appreciation for tuning study practices to the individual for optimal results. Learning to work with my ADHD has…

I think, its a physics tutor's responsibility in helping the student to understand their inner potential by suggesting ways to broaden their skill sets, pushing their boundary to convey that there is much to learn in life. Other than being a punctual and effective educator, I am flexible by allowing my students to learn in their own phase. It…

In addition to improving the student's understanding of a particular subject area, the real value comes from: (1) learning *how* to learn; in other words, getting to understand the many resources available (web and paper), attacking the problem, and getting the answer independently. This is empowering for the student, and essential for further…

The most important things a physics tutor can do for a student are to foster understanding, build confidence, and create a supportive learning environment. I believe a tutor’s role is to help students not only learn the material but also understand the reasoning behind each concept, enabling them to apply it in various contexts. Positive…

I consider the most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to ensure that the student fully understands the content being taught at their level. I think it can be quite easy for a tutor to rush or even skip the easy stuff in favour for the more interesting, harder content, which can leave a student lost and feeling inadequate. I…

It's important for a physics tutor to help a student get the correct answer, but more importantly it is critical that the student understands the concept behind which the answer was based. It is important for a tutor to be able to communicate with the individual in the way which is best suited for the student so that they can efficiently grasp the…

Inside BerowraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ella focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, as well as practising long division with remainders.

For Year 9, Sam worked through probability concepts using dot plots and frequency tables to analyse data distributions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia explored financial mathematics by calculating simple and compound interest, alongside tackling area and perimeter problems relevant to real-world scenarios.

Recent Challenges

Not showing working caused a Year 10 student to lose marks in recent tests—"he had full pages with no working," which made it difficult to spot and correct errors, especially in surds and algebra.

In Year 11, forgetting formulas for compound interest and depreciation meant extra time was spent searching rather than solving problems.

A Year 7 student regularly misread multi-step word problems; one tutor noted: "He stopped after finding how many went on the excursion, but missed the question about those who did NOT go."

For a primary student, messy number placement in long division made following calculations—and self-correction—much harder.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Berowra noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after struggling to apply the compound interest formula in past sessions, was able to use it accurately without prompting for both monthly and quarterly scenarios.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student who used to mix up like terms showed clear improvement by independently grouping and simplifying expressions correctly during algebra work.

At primary level, one student who previously hesitated with time zone questions is now confidently calculating time differences between countries using tables, even deciding whether to add or subtract based on location.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Berowra Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pacific Berowra Christian School.
