A good tutor should firstly ensure that the student has a solid grasp of the foundational knowledge underpinning their subject, before moving on to teach more complex concepts. This is because oftentimes a subject's more advanced concepts will draw heavily from assumed foundational knowledge. Additionally a tutor can instill confidence in a…

A tutor can build confidence and a positive approach towards studies in a student. Marks are important but what's more important is giving an exam with confidence and with a winning attitude. If this is done, then marks will follow behind. I believe that a student should cultivate these two things as they will lead to success in the future.…

A tutor's main job is to help re-explaining new concepts and/or help students consolidate new concepts as well as integrating new ones as they are being taught. Therefore, the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to explain new concepts in simple and relatable terms, encourage interests in a particular subject and most…

A student comes to a tutor looking for extra help, answers and guidance. I strongly feel that tutors can make a huge difference to a student's academic front. The most important things us tutors can do are be patient and listen, willing to explain more than once if required, enable students to end up answering their questions rather than answering…

Pay attention to the student and be attentive to their needs. Show interest in their progress as well as help set them goals. Understand that stress and anxiety needs to be addressed as something important and skills to move pass this are needed. Tutors should not and can not ever give up on a learner. I consider tutoring to be important in two ways: academics and self-growth. Being a tutor to me means bringing out the best in someone academically as well as providing them with the tools they need to become independent, life-long learners. I think a great tutor is someone who can help their student grow to love and appreciate the subject of…

I believe that as a tutor, personalise students' study plan is very important, because every student has unique learning requirements, challenges and strengths, so it is crucial to remodelling teaching methods to tolerate their situations, at the same time providing support, monitor their progressing and help them to build confidence. Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

I believe a tutor should be able to pass on their mindset of growth and resilience to a student. I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to develop a passion for the subject. This is essential as it encourages the student to not only thrive in school but also in their out of school learning, making the process of learning much easier for both the student and the parent. To achieve this, it's important to…

Inside Beulah ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Milly revised converting **fractions to decimals and percentages**, then practised order of operations and division questions.

Year 8 student Areeba focused on **multiplying decimals by whole numbers using the grid method**, as well as reviewing decimal multiplication by 10, 100, and 1000.

For Year 9, Shehroz worked on **classifying angles**—including right, obtuse, and acute—and started long division with two-digit dividends and one-digit divisors.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 English student's presentation became "chaotic and disjointed" when ideas were listed out of order, making it hard for the audience to follow.

In Year 9, sentence structure issues meant written work sometimes lacked clarity, with one tutor noting that "paragraph flow was lost."

For a Year 7 maths task, forgetting to show working during order of operations questions led to hidden calculation errors and confusion between acute and reflex angles.

In primary years, some students struggled with times tables but hesitated to practice more challenging combinations, which slowed progress on multi-step arithmetic.

Recent Achievements

One Beulah Park tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Harrison, who previously struggled to recall trigonometric ratios, start identifying opposite and adjacent triangle sides more independently—he now shows his working out without prompting.

A Year 8 student, Milly, has begun correcting her own mistakes when comparing integers and only occasionally needs the number line for support, a shift from earlier sessions where she needed step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Pranavi realised on her own why adding denominators was wrong with fractions and then solved mixed number problems without any hints or reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Norwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mary MacKillop College.
