The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to learn, as it is a skill which is useful throughout the life. No matter in which field you foray, the zest to learn new things will always keep you ahead. I believe my biggest strength is my ability to articulate and be present at the moment, so that I can assist with my…

I think the biggest thing a tutor can do for a student is provide confidence. With confidence a student can approach a subject with understanding but also take risks and experiment and question the subject which leads to a better understanding and ultimately a passion for the topic. I share a passion for learning and try to pass that along to…

Keep lessons engaged. Understand the needs of the student. And finally help them realise their passion for a subject. I have been on the receiving end and know exactly the type of challenges a student faces at certain points along a subject or schooling journey. Being able to share my solutions can better equip them to find their…

Help them achieve their goals. It isn't about getting the highest marks, it's about improving and feeling good about going into tests and exams and feeling confident you know the material. Being able to complete tests to the best of your ability is always the main goal. Slow and detailed explanations of the topic. I'm really good at going in depth…

It's important to create a supportive environment where a student is comfortable enough asking questions, because much of the learning comes from filling gaps in their understanding. Be a friend. This is how I was taught by my tutors and this is how I taught as well. If there is a deeper bond than that of just a student and teacher, the student really shines. The students open up more to the teacher. This helps the teacher to plan on how to help the student. I can understand what the student needs. I can connect with the…

Assist, and them let them do it. Give the tools, but let them build. At first when solving a problem or explaining a concept, the person hearing for the first time may find it hard to understand. However, for most STEM courses, consistency is the key. If the student learn this and understand that by doing it over and over, they will be able to do…

Building a students confidence in a subject area is the most important thing you can impart as a tutor to a student. The most important thing a tutor can do is make the student passionate about their subject. If the student isn't motivated to learn, no amount of lecturing or assignments will help them. There are so many small things about each subject that are super interesting to learn about, but without the right tutor some students miss out. As a young tutor…

Margie, Bexley

Inside BexleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student William focused on index laws and scientific notation, then practiced probability questions using examples from Chapter 2.

A Year 11 student, Emily, worked through HSC exam paper problems covering normal distribution and financial mathematics, as well as finding roots of quadratic equations with applications in geometry.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Olivia strengthened her understanding of angle theory—especially with parallel lines and triangles—and reviewed plotting straight line graphs on the Cartesian plane.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student often avoided writing full working in algebra and calculus, saying "I know the answer," but missing steps led to calculation slips—especially under exam pressure.

In Year 9, a lack of organisation with formulae meant that when solving geometry problems, the correct method was known but not set out clearly on paper.

For a Year 5 learner, motivation dropped after returning from a long holiday; homework was incomplete and key multiplication facts had to be re-taught during sessions.

These habits left students spending valuable lesson time retracing steps or relearning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Bexley tutor noticed Milo, a Year 12 student, had previously found financial maths and normal distribution formulas challenging but now solves related problems independently and accurately.

Benjamin, in high school as well, initially hesitated with square roots; after working through the concept step by step, he managed to solve equations and factorise expressions without needing prompts.

Meanwhile, Jessica in Year 5 used to struggle with fractions—she would guess answers instead of showing her process—but recently completed her homework almost error-free, checking her own work before asking for feedback.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bexley Public School.
