Inspire a genuine passion for the subject, rather than just learning for the sake of school. When students find enjoyment and appreciation in what they're studying, learning becomes easier, and this mindset will benefit them with anything they need to learn in the future. Patience and making learning fun. I take the time to understand each…

Tutors must be able to listen to their student's learning needs in order to be able to fully recognise what they must do to help their students with their learning. All student's have the ability to do as well as the can in school when educator's listen to them and give them the best tools to motivate them to learn. I am in my third year of my…

A great tutor doesn’t just give answers but helps students work through problems on their own. It’s also important to create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes…

I believe a tutor can uplift the confidence of a student by encouraging him/her every step of the way which will benefit the students in their future. I would say breaking down a complex matter into a simpler solution so that the concept is easier to grasp for the students. Making the lessons easier by using storytelling as examples when the…

To find the weaknesses of each and every individual students and come up with different strategies to help them learn. I also believe a tutor should be patient and repeats themselves if necessary. Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a tutor…

By recognising the challenges students may encounter along their learning journey and demonstrating empathy towards these obstacles, a positive and supportive environment is created between the student and tutor. There are many facets of tutoring essential to achieve the optimum yet I think the most important element is the one on one quality of tutoring. This enables a student to be provided with specific feedback and assistance of their areas for improvement or difficulties. Understanding the strengths an weaknesses of a student is the most important…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

Be a friend. This is how I was taught by my tutors and this is how I taught as well. If there is a deeper bond than that of just a student and teacher, the student really shines. The students open up more to the teacher. This helps the teacher to plan on how to help the student. I can understand what the student needs. I can connect with the…

Inside Bexley NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Breana focused on solving simultaneous equations both graphically and algebraically, and also worked through break-even point and revenue/loss graphs using textbook and HSC-style questions.

Year 9 Aiya revised how to calculate the circumference, radius, and diameter of circles, then applied percentage calculations to real-life scenarios she came up with.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Melia tackled quadratic equations and non-linear functions by breaking down classwork step-by-step, ensuring understanding of solving quadratic models and their applications.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, a student often left homework incomplete or delayed, making it harder to recall methods during lessons—"if you leave it for a few weeks, it's difficult to remember how to do it."

In Year 10 algebra sessions, working out was sometimes skipped or not clearly written line by line, which hid where mistakes crept in and slowed feedback.

One Year 7 student relied heavily on calculators for basic questions rather than practicing mental calculation as suggested.

In senior years, revision was sometimes limited to familiar topics instead of targeting weaker areas before assessments, leading to repeated confusion under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bexley North noticed that a Year 10 student who previously struggled with algebraic equations is now confidently explaining the steps out loud and identifying patterns without prompting.

In another recent session, a Year 8 student who often hesitated to ask for help began actively requesting clarification on tricky time difference questions, showing real initiative compared to earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, one primary student made a breakthrough by not only recalling her times tables quicker than before but also completing long division problems independently at the end of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley North Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bexley North Public School.
