I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

As tutoring may be an outside source of school that is not compulsory, it is important to be able to push the students to revise on their work and properly understand their content to a higher level. Tutors are to act patient and as a role model for their students,…

One important thing a tutor can do is clearly understand what a student wants with their tutor. For example, if a student already know concepts really well, a tutor should be able to identify this and spend more time on areas where a student may struggle. Furthermore, it is important to consider the student first and foremost. A tutor should be…

Inside BirrongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jason revised algebraic techniques including expanding and simplifying expressions, then practiced solving linear equations using worked examples.

Year 9 student Sarah focused on coordinate geometry by calculating gradients and reviewing angle properties, while also consolidating her understanding of congruency in triangles for an upcoming test.

For Year 6, Emily worked through problems involving negative numbers and basic algebra revision, using Venn diagrams to reinforce set concepts alongside her number skills.

Recent Challenges

In recent Year 10 and 11 maths sessions, a reluctance to show full working—especially in algebra or trigonometry—meant "it was difficult to backtrack and pinpoint where he went wrong," as one tutor noted.

Incomplete homework has also cropped up; on several occasions, last-minute attempts left William feeling unprepared for new material.

In a Year 9 lesson, frequent calculator use replaced mental computation, particularly with times tables and negative numbers, slowing progress on foundational skills.

When faced with unfamiliar compound interest or index law questions, hesitation led to second-guessing rather than confident problem-solving. This sometimes resulted in missed marks and growing self-doubt during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Birrong tutor noticed one high school student is now spotting and fixing his own algebra mistakes, whereas he used to rely heavily on hints—he recently worked through a set of equations almost entirely unaided.

Another older student, who was previously hesitant with trigonometry, has started applying SOH CAH TOA rules from memory and even drew on earlier topics to tackle trickier trig questions without prompting.

In a Year 5 session, a student began choosing mental strategies over always reaching for the calculator and remembered several algebra question types from past lessons, showing this off by finishing an entire worksheet without outside help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Regents Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Birrong Girls High School.
