A tutor should be resourceful and be able to continuously encourage the student to achieve their goals and more. They need to be able to readily respond to all types of questions within the curriculum and about the school system (eg the VCE system) to make the student feel confident and prepared to meet their learning goals. I have experience…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, ensure genuine understanding, and create a supportive learning environment. A good tutor doesn’t just explain content, but adapts to the student’s needs, breaks down complex ideas clearly, and checks for understanding through practice. Encouraging…

A tutor must be able to recognise exactly what the student is struggling with, and thus also be able to ameliorate this issue through their knowledge, even if it requires perseverance. A tutor must also explain every step concisely to the student, so that it can make sense to the student, not just merely to an experienced tutor. I am very good at…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence in their own abilities. When students feel supported, understood, and encouraged, they become more willing to ask questions, take on challenges, and stay motivated. A great tutor does not just teach content, they create a positive environment where students feel…

Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

Actually speaking, the tutor should focus on potential development rahter than merely improving the skills of a student. It could be best tutors can adopt practices such as NLP ( neuro linguistic programming) to boost rapid learning of a student. But for that only truly commited tutors would raise their hands. Since it reqires a lot of hard yards.…

I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. Obviously, we are not responsible for every burden the student have, but I…

The most important thing for a tutor is not to provide the answer but rather to assist the student in reaching the solution. As a tutor, I will not provide the solution for students or instruct them on assignments. My intention will be to release ideas and process them to attain the correct outcome. Through this method, students will learn how to…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

Inside Black RockTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Isabel practised times tables and division with remainders, then worked on reading comprehension using short stories.

For Year 9 Jack, sessions focused on simplifying and expanding algebraic expressions as well as working with like terms in algebra.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Mia tackled solving linear equations using a CAS calculator and revised geometric sequences and arithmetic sequences through chapter exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for exams left most revision until the week before, which limited time for deep practice and meant she "needed to work on more questions prior to the test."

For a Year 8 student, working mainly on easier exercise numbers was noted: "try completing one or two of the difficult questions... much more effective than just the lower numbered exercises."

In Year 6 maths, messy written calculations sometimes made it hard to find errors; as observed, "needs to lay out his steps on paper." These habits led to last-minute stress and hidden mistakes during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Black Rock noticed Isabel, a Year 9 student, has begun to check her answers independently using the textbook and corrects her own mistakes—a big shift from relying on step-by-step guidance earlier this term.

In Year 11 maths, Grace started preparing questions ahead of each session and now confidently tackles financial maths problems she once found confusing.

Meanwhile, Gisele in Year 3 recently managed to read aloud for an extended period without hesitation and even remembered to pause at commas—something she struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Black Rock Primary School.
