To ensure that the student actually learns something that is useful, and understands how to do the question, so they can complete the questions by themselves without help. I think my strengths are patience to allow someone time to understand, being clear on how to do something and my very high math…

Be able to explain things clearly and in a way that the child will understand. Also, it is important to be open to, and encourage questions about any little detail they do not understand to ensure they gain the best understanding of the concepts. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is always listen to them and know what best works for them. This can mean to always pay attention to a student and understand how they learn effectively. This may mean having to make changes and adaptations to your tutoring style which is fine as long as the student gets the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to be adaptable to their circumstances and learning style. Each student is different, and a tutor should be ready to change their teaching style to suit the students needs to facilitate the student's development. This gives the student the best chance to succeed. I…

A tutor can play a very important role in motivating the student so that he can understand and achieve. Thus, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instilling a strong belief in them that they can achieve whatever they want, provided they are giving their best. Most of the subjects that I have listed, I love studying them. I am…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. A tutor should also help to develop skills for a student to understand a concept, not just remember it, and build on a student's ability to learn independently. I am relatable as I am a recently graduated student and am continuing my studies at Monash University, studying a…

Inside BlackburnTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Carla focused on polynomial operations and transformations to prepare for her upcoming SAC, including practice questions on both topics.

For Year 11 Ethan, recent lessons included mastering long division and factor theorem with polynomials, plus interpreting and sketching square root graphs and hyperbolas.

Meanwhile, Year 12 Ava worked through differentiation by first principles as well as applications such as finding the equations of tangents and normals to curves.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 test preparation, one student's "rushed approach" and rapid self-questioning led to errors, particularly when tackling polynomial long division—"he was eager to start but skipped clarifying his plan."

In Year 9 mathematics, another student hesitated to build her summary book or organize earlier notes, making it harder to recall older concepts during revision.

For a Year 12 assessment, an over-reliance on calculators meant she missed key steps in graph transformations by not setting out working clearly.

These habits left students feeling unprepared and less confident as exam dates approached.

Recent Achievements

One Blackburn tutor noticed that Lachlan, a high school student, has become much more confident with statistics—he now interprets histograms and calculates measures like mean and quartiles almost independently, whereas he used to hesitate with these.

In another session, Haydn showed real growth by recognising mistakes in graphing questions without prompting; previously, he'd just move on if something felt tricky.

For a younger student, Carla demonstrated new initiative by asking for clarification whenever she got stuck instead of staying silent—a big shift from earlier lessons where she rarely spoke up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blackburn Primary School.
