Chemistry can seem abstract, learning about elements and matter, how equilibrium occurs and how chemical systems react. No wonder students get discouraged.
All it takes for a student to go from a mild distaste for chemistry to understanding what is scribbled in the textbook is someone to point out what to avoid and where to put in that extra hour of revision. It's like with any problem situation in schooling and even in their personal life, students need to know about using effective strategies. Then all you need is persistence, staying on task until you reach your goal.

The proof is always in the action, to get an idea of how tutoring works in practice check out some feedback from tutors. Typically tutors focus on strategies needed to make progress, what's going well and what needs improvement. Of course, every tutor has their own unique style that is tailored to your child's specific needs.
Max is using correct learning strategies, however some work can be done. He is correctly talking aloud what is going through his head when he is doing his work. However he needs to put more of his ideas and information to paper, instead of doing it all in his head. He has enough confidence and with more understanding he will be able to refine his skills.
As we move onto more advanced problems, one area that is lacking is in tackling problems that he has trouble with. He has no problems doing assigned problems that he is familiar with but when presented with something unfamiliar, he tends to freeze up and we're currently working on better notes so that he has some starting point when he feels lost.
For most questions, he knows what approach to take to achieve the solution, however, some questions require students to be able to infer some hidden information/conditions that are vital to finding the solution, and he sometimes has difficulty in identifying these. With enough practice, this problem area can be easily overcome.
Patrick is great, he is working so well with Drew. He has already given Drew the confidence he needs to be able to learn. Thank you for sending Patrick.
We are very impressed with Geoff. He was very kind and engaging with Michael today. Thank you.
Gary is doing a great job and Emilee is really appreciative of their time together.
