The goal of tutoring, in some sense, should be to equip students with the skills to no longer need tutoring. I believe this is best achieved by allowing the student to choose study-related goals, and help them take achievable steps in order to get there. As their competence increases in proximity to the larger goal, so too does their confidence as…

*Be a mentor, rather than a tutor. My aim would be to gain the trust of my students so that they do not feel even a tad bit shy or hesitant in sharing their queries and problems they encounter in the course of their studies. *Encourage students to ask questions, and answering them to the best of my abilities, without any hint of exasperation on…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a supportive and patient learning environment, tailor lessons to the student's individual needs, and encourage a growth mindset. A tutor should help students build confidence in their abilities, clarify difficult concepts, and motivate them to stay engaged and curious about their…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel confident in themselves. Teaching content is part of it, but guiding them to believe they can tackle challenges on their own is even more important. A tutor should make learning feel manageable by breaking things into clear, achievable pieces and giving students tools they…

Help them learn that they are capable of doing the subject, that they are good at it. If you have the confidence and belief that you can do it the rest will come. Patience, ability to meet the specific needs of a student, making the practice enjoyable and engaging. I believe that all students are capable of improving and achieving in their study.…

Every child is unique, so he/she has to be dealt with and moulded accordingly. The greatest thing in my eyes that a tutor can do for a student is listening to the student requirements as to what or where he/she needs special attention, or what he is grabbing or not. The greatest asset to this is communication, a student can only open his/her heart…

The most important thing I can do as a tutor is meet every student where they are. That means truly listening to them, understanding what they already know, and empowering them to vocalize their own thought process because when a student can articulate their thinking, real learning begins. Rather than lecturing, I guide. I help students connect…

A tutor should be patient and supportive. Every child sets his/her own pace of doing things and sometimes they might not get it right, so it is important to be understanding. I am very patient, it doesn't matter how long it takes for a child to understand a topic, because it is quite normal. I would not mind repeating it over and over. I am also…

Patience and humility. When teaching, one must maintain composure or they will go off course. Additionally, the tutor should never believe that they are more knowledgeable than their students in all topics or that they know everything. Many teachers dislike it when their pupils contradict them and turn the situation into an ego conflict. This is…

1. The tutor should be open minded and let the student show any problems in their homework or tests etc. 2. I can be assertive, but not authoritative. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. From my own experience, I know how powerful it is when someone takes the time to understand your gaps, explain things at…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is make the student feel truly listened to. When a student feels heard and understood, they gain confidence. Listen to the student. I think it's important that tutors listen to their students to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and get to know them. By doing this, you'll be able to help them in the way that works best for them, in the areas that they're struggling with the most. Sometimes there are things outside of schoolwork that make it hard…

Sally Huynh, Blackburn South

Inside Blackburn SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ethan practised solving linear equations and worked on fraction summation and subtraction for fluency.

In Year 10, Emily focused on quadratic functions, including finding the equation of a line and tackling algebraic measurement problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Aisha prepared for her Mathematical Methods SAC by revising polynomials—specifically long division, remainder theorem, and factor theorem—and explored domain and range using set notation in function questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, a student was encouraged to organize and regularly update her summary book, but struggled to recall information from earlier in the year—"remembering the small information and organizing summary book" remained a challenge before exams.

Meanwhile, during Year 8 algebra sessions, another student's written work lacked clarity: "Need to add more step during the calculation," making it difficult to spot simplification errors.

Under SAC conditions in Year 12 Methods, one student second-guessed solutions and rushed into answers without planning—"he seemed to be second guessing himself and talking things over very rapidly." This led to confusion and missed marks when tackling multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Blackburn South tutor noted a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now openly requests help when stuck, which has made her algebra sessions much more productive.

A Year 11 student, after repeated struggles with graphing circular functions, began drawing the graphs accurately and independently identifying transformations without prompting.

In another session, a Year 7 student who once mixed up fraction operations is now confidently finding lowest common denominators and completing multi-step problems on her own.

Last week, one senior student collected past exams themselves to review weak areas before their upcoming assessment.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Luke the Evangelist School.
