From experience, I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is allowing the student to be able to set their own goals. As a tutor I should still push students to do the best they can, but I feel that students typically only do what they want to do unless they are academically competitive. I just want to be able to help…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to understand their lifestyle and work according to that so that there is minimal pressure and more learning for them. In order to do that, it’s better to get to know the child and adjust according to what they prefer and how they want to be treated and/or taught. I think…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is address a students weakens and advise them on how they can improve upon that weakness. For me when I was a student the best thing the teacher could do was give my examples and tons of practice that’s the way I learnt and it worked for me. Working according to the student whatever works for them,…

Build confidence, create a supportive environment, and teach in a way that makes sense to the student. A tutor should help students understand the why behind concepts so they can become independent learners. I am patient and good at breaking down complex ideas into simple steps. It's simple, for a tutor it is most important to communicate and to be able to explain not just complex problem in simple and easy to follow manner, but simple things as well, this is what I believe differentiates a good tutor from a great tutor. This is because as a tutor it is vitally important to understand the levels the students are at and be…

A tutor should be able to help clear each and every notion that the student has about a certain topic. They should not get tired of explaining concepts on repeat. A good tutor should always be consistent and take note of what their student does. They should regularly follow up on lesson plans and make sure that the student is not burdened by any…

Making the students feel confident on themselves and their strength is arguably the most important thing a tutor can do for student. The most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure that the child fully understands the lesson, and finds purpose in it. The student should not only study it because it is a requirement, but because they find it interesting, This I believe is a very crucial task for tutors. If a child is passionate about a subject, they will automatically study…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student's confidence and change their perspective on learning. By helping students see that challenges are manageable, a tutor can make learning feel…

I think the most important a tutor can do for a student is to get to know and read them perfectly. This allows a tutor to know exactly what a student needs to excel, help them set realistic goals and knowing not only when to help but also when not to help, rather letting the student try and solve a complex question themselves without interference.…

A tutor, more than simply teach content, should be able to make their subject enjoyable, open and motivational for students. A successful tutor is one whose influence goes beyond the tutoring center, and drives greater change in the students academic and personal life. Inside BlairmountTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sarah focused on multiplying and dividing whole numbers, as well as simplifying fractions through targeted worksheets.

In Year 9, James tackled trigonometric ratios—sin, cos, and tan—and practiced applying the Pythagorean theorem to right-angled triangles while also reviewing bearings and triangle angle properties.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily worked on linear relationships by finding equations for straight lines in both intercept and general forms, along with identifying gradients and y-intercepts using real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student often resisted writing answers independently, preferring to discuss and have the tutor write them—"he is defiant with writing the answers himself"—which limited his engagement in comprehension tasks.

In Year 9 mathematics, one student struggled with organizing solutions, making it harder to follow their algebraic working; as a tutor observed, "I advised the student to organize his solutions and try to practice writing complete solutions."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student repeatedly mixed up the gradient and y-intercept when rearranging linear equations, leading to confusion during graphing tasks. This resulted in extra time spent clarifying basics rather than progressing onto advanced content.

Recent Achievements

One Blairmount tutor noticed a Year 4 student who used to fidget and hesitate now eagerly joins in with rhyming activities, staying focused throughout the session.

In high school, one student who previously relied on step-by-step help for geometry problems has started explaining his reasoning aloud and tackling questions more independently, even applying new strategies without prompting.

Another secondary student made a breakthrough with quadratic equations: after struggling to factorise non-monic quadratics, she managed to use the general formula correctly and began setting equations equal to zero unprompted. She finished by completing several examples using her own working out.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blairmount Public School.
