The most important role is to build understanding and confidence. A good tutor should create a comfortable environment where the student should feel free to ask questions, identify gaps in their knowledge, and gradually making students capable of solving problems on their own. I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind concepts or…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide a structured learning environment. Often, the biggest source of exam-related stress is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material and not seeing the connections between topics. A tutor should help students make sense of this by summarizing key concepts and looking ahead,…

Most important thing for any tutor is to understand their student well. If they know the students quite well only then they could develop the educational materials and classes that caters the student's need. Next big thing is encouraging the students and help them maintain a positive attitude. Only if the student is motivated and have positive…

To help students to not feel overwhelmed by the subject, since this can extinguish any desire to learn further. I find that the best way of doing this is to break questions or ideas into smaller parts so that the areas that they are struggling with can be identified, isolated, and worked through. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for their students is to support them in their way of learning while also offering alternative study methods that may help them to better understand a concept. In my humble opinion, I believe that ACTIVE LISTENING is the most important quality that good tutors must possess. - Good tutors must recognise that students generally have an idea of the topic at hand. Instead of simply continuing to "teach" it is vital that tutors ask students of their understanding of the topic so that gaps in knowledge can…

I think a good tutor is beyond just a subject matter expert and can be conducive to the development of the student as a whole. I feel the concept of tutoring is very personal and that a tutor should make a student feel comfortable enough to encourage him/her to view the tutor as a confidante. Furthermore, there's the added advantage of being able…

Inside BooragoonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Lillie worked through patterns and algebra, plus location and transformations using tailored questions to target areas needing improvement.

For Year 8 Matteo, the session focused on linear lines and solving simultaneous equations, including test-style problems for practice.

Year 10 Olivia reviewed past measurement tests—covering perimeter, area, surface area, and volume—and then revised probability concepts such as Venn diagrams and two-way tables to strengthen understanding before her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits need attention across year levels.

A Year 8 student repeatedly ran out of time in tests, with the tutor noting, "a lot of questions that weren't answered were due to running out of time."

For a Year 10 learner, messy or incomplete working—especially skipping steps in algebra—meant errors went unnoticed until review.

In one senior session, failure to bring required textbooks and materials led to lost learning opportunities; as observed: "needs to bring textbook to tutoring sessions."

Meanwhile, a primary student's homework was not completed before the lesson, resulting in half the session being spent catching up instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Booragoon tutor recently saw a Year 11 student take real initiative by starting a daily journal to track tricky economics topics, something he hadn't done before, which helped him recall key concepts for his final exam.

A high schooler who used to hesitate when stuck on maths questions now openly talks through her problem-solving steps and cross-checks answers aloud, rather than staying silent or guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often rushed her homework has begun completing all assigned work independently and on time—last week she handed in every task without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Booragoon Primary School.
