The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a positive learning environment, identify a student's specific needs, and help them build both skills and confidence. A tutor should not only teach content but also develop good study habits and support students in becoming independent learners. One of my biggest strengths is being…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is provide them with confidence. By creating an environment where students feel confident in their abilities, a tutor can encourage them to reach heights they may have never thought possible, helping them overcome these perceived 'barriers', often created due to a lack of…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students believe in themselves. Sometimes they know more than they think—they just need someone to encourage them and show them they’re capable. And remind students that learning is a process. A tutor should focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate the small wins along the…

The most important things to a student are when their tutor is honest, patient, a good listener, and confident in their teaching. Sometimes when the tutor tends to share their own experiences, it builds up the connection between the tutor and the student. Once there is a friendly environment between the two parties, it will be more advantageous…

A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. A tutor should also help to develop skills for a student to understand a concept, not just remember it, and build on a student's ability to learn independently. Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

I think a good tutor can make studies feel like a piece of cake rather than rocket science. I think as a tutor it is my job to foster critical thinking and problem solving skills, so that a student can develop independent ideas and eventually become confident in the subject. I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. Obviously, we are not responsible for every burden the student have, but I…

A tutor needs to be patient with the student, no matter the student's age/grade level. It is extremely important that the student feels comfortable with the tutor and is able to ask any question, be it big or small. I think encouraging students to develop self-learning skills plays the important role in educational networks as we cannot tutor them forever. We should not only assist students only to understand the materials provided but also teach them the skills of how to learn effectively and what to do when encountering the new lesson/content of knowledge…

Inside Box Hill SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Summer practised reading aloud with expressive punctuation and worked on multiplication, division, and order of operations using BIDMAS.

In Year 9, Jolie completed a timed selective-school style maths test and reviewed errors in both ACER Maths and Science practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student covered simultaneous equations from the Cambridge VCE Methods 1&2 textbook and was introduced to basic trigonometry concepts along with calculator skills relevant for VCE Methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which made it hard to spot calculation slips. This meant more time spent searching for mistakes instead of building confidence.

During Year 7 fractions and ratios, answers were sometimes written without full working—especially when converting between percentages and decimals—which left the logic behind his solutions unclear.

In senior functions, there was a tendency to avoid writing out all transformations or endpoints when graphing hybrid functions; this led to confusion mid-question and slowed progress.

When worded problems appeared in both Years 8 and 11, hesitation with identifying key terms often blocked him from forming equations at all.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Box Hill South recently saw Annabel, a senior student, move from confusion to independence with logarithms—she now solves exponentials with different bases on her own after previously needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, James (Year 10) was struggling to interpret worded maths questions but now independently translates them into algebraic expressions and substitutes values accurately, a shift from earlier hesitation and guesswork.

In Year 5, Jacob had difficulty handling negative numbers; using number lines during his {Box Hill South tutoring} session helped him visualise the process so well that he now completes these calculations unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kingswood College.
