The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them become a confident and independent learner. This involves building genuine understanding rather than reliance on memorisation, and teaching transferable problem-solving strategies that students can apply across different subjects. Equally important is creating a supportive and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to inspire and encourage them to take charge in their learning and step outside their comfortable zones to learn new things and expand their horizons. This encourages students to become independent lifelong learners and creates a positive attitude towards learning. My strengths as a tutor…

A tutor's most important role is to listen, observe, and provide students with the necessary tools and strategies to learn effectively. By doing so, tutors can help students overcome academic challenges, develop lifelong learning skills, and foster a cycle of confidence, motivation, and success. To begin with, although I am relatively new to…

Personally, I think the most important thing a tutor can do is teach students which will stay with them throughout their life and can applied outside of just education. Instead of just teaching the student how to solve just one problem, it is better to teach them the skills required to approach any and all problems. Problem…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them build their skills so that they can efficiently study. I also think a tutor should be able to teach students how to effectively study and implement study techniques. My strengths as a tutor would be that I am determined in my own studies and I try to methodically break down…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to explan or simply the difficult concepts in a manner the student understands, and to build their confidence while doing a problem in which they are likely to make mistakes and also teaching them how to be patient if they are unable to solve something and how to go on forward from that…

Give them confidence- either to have a crack at new questions or topics, or just continue to work and learn independently. Usually this is achieved by helping students find a way to enjoy the subject. I'm a good communicator and very empathetic. I've always been told I'd be an excellent teacher- my habit is to always make sure a tutee has…

Adjusting their teaching style to suit the way that student learns. Sometimes, explaining the content for a long time will work, but most of the time it doesn't. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help the student learn in a way that works for them. Therefore, sometimes a student that is struggling is only struggling because they learn better with a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is give the student more confidence in themselves and their learning. There is only so much you can teach someone if they give up on themselves, so the most important thing is ensuring that confidence. Tutors can instill confidence in students, which is very important. Students already have so many things to stress about, by giving them some confidence and reassurance in their school work you can help them feel better. Tutors should provide a safe space where students feel comfortable in sharing their concerns. As a tutor you should prioritize…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand what their student is struggling with and make a plan to deal with the issue at hand. This requires building a connection with students and understanding how they might learn a specific topic. All students are unique and learn differently than other students, which requires the ability…

I truly think empowering a student to ask questions is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. The confidence to ask questions leads to a student's ability to think for themselves. This combination is what allows maximum progress. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen. I believe listening is very important since if you don't listen to your student, or get them to explain concepts for themselves, you won't be able to deduce which areas to focus on. One of my weaknesses as a tutor would have to be that if my student is having difficulty,…

We have enjoyed working with Nick. He is friendly and reliable and tailors things to my daughter's needs. They play card games together and he makes her laugh. Just what we needed.

Inside BrightonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Izzy worked on rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 using number lines, along with practicing timetables and basic multiplication/division problems.

For Year 9, Georgia focused on ratios and percentages, as well as representing data through histograms and frequency tables.

In Year 11, Will covered quadratic expressions by expanding and factorising polynomials, then tackled inequalities involving both algebraic manipulation and graphing simple solution sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student preparing for rates and ratios needed to consult notes frequently before recalling processes, slowing her down in tests; she had to check notes before applying a formula, observed one tutor.

In Year 10, an assignment was delayed due to missed deadlines—this meant fewer chances to clarify doubts before submission.

Meanwhile, a senior student in calculus often hesitated to ask questions about steps they'd misapplied, resulting in repeated errors on integration problems.

For one Year 5 learner, untidy working made it hard for the tutor to trace mistakes in multi-step subtraction tasks, leaving misconceptions unresolved until reviewed together.

Recent Achievements

A Brighton tutor recently saw a Year 11 student complete an entire maths exam within the time limit—previously, he'd run out of time or skipped questions under pressure.

Another high school student, who used to need every step explained for algebra, now regularly tries word problems independently and only checks in when she's truly stuck.

Meanwhile, one of our younger learners made a noticeable leap: after weeks of guessing times tables answers, he now confidently recites his sixes from memory and even started answering related division questions without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sandgate Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Kieran's School.
