I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. Although understanding a subject is extremely important, I believe the students' willingness to learn is equally important as trying to teach a student to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

I believe a tutor should not only help a student academically but also boost their confidence and foster a love for learning. A good tutor builds trust and encourages independent thinking that will equip students with the tools and mindset they need to succeed for the long-term. My strengths are that I am patient, the ability to break down…

I think a tutor can teach a student how to learn a topic after it is explained by the tutor. Because at the end, it is the student who needs to learn by themselves after something is being taught to them. A tutor should make sure that anyone can learn those topics on their own if they are introduced by the tutor. My first strength as a tutor is my…

It's to be able to notice the reasons behind my students' struggle and find out the right method and the right way to help them make adjustments and become better at it. It's clear that I am not sort of an expert in the subjects that my students are struggling with, but I would undoubtedly do my best to get them better, including flexibly doing…

Helping students relieve their academic stress and support them as much as I can. One of my main strengths is that I have numerous study techniques that I can share with them. Hence, my students…

Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. There are a lot of students who don't lack in talent and just a couple little things are holding them back. Solving those can really help them grow. I am able to seperate a topic into byte sized…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. However, this can be challenging especially when they have many knowledge gaps and feel fallen behind at school. A good tutor is able to identify and fill in those gaps, helping students realise their full potentials and gain confidence. It is also important…

Make sure that you're not doing the work for them, only assisting them in their learning- For it will be them sitting the exam come the end of the year. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe to be wrong. So many students disengage from learning because they're afraid of making mistakes or looking unintelligent. Once that fear is removed, real learning can happen. Beyond that, I think a tutor should personalise every session understanding where the student is…

I believe support and encouragement are the most important elements that me as a tutor can help my students. Some other students may experience difficulties in study (do not get a good result), so…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

Inside Brooklyn ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Portia explored place value with decimals and practiced ascending and descending order using decimal numbers, working visually to reinforce understanding.

In Year 8, Alex focused on solving linear equations—including translating word problems into algebraic form—and reviewed techniques for tackling inequalities.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ben revised trigonometry concepts such as the unit circle and SOHCAHTOA, also strengthening skills in Pythagoras' theorem through targeted practice problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, a student often relied on mental calculation instead of writing out sums—after a five-second pause, she would solve in her head rather than confirm the operation on paper. This sometimes led to confusion and missed errors, as noted: "Remembering to solve operations on paper instead of in her head."

In Year 11 coordinate geometry, setting out variables before entering values into a calculator was inconsistent; skipping this step made it harder to spot mistakes.

In one session, using the wrong calculator function caused frustration and self-doubt, especially when the error went unchecked until review.

Recent Achievements

A Brooklyn Park tutor recently saw a Year 10 student who used to rush through reading assignments now slow down, reread sentences for clarity, and even reach for a dictionary or thesaurus independently—something she avoided before.

In Year 8 maths, one student who previously hesitated to ask for help now confidently points out difficulties, especially with rounding and multiplication strategies.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student made a leap by connecting "weeks" to 7 times tables after struggling with this link last term, then eagerly completed a set of related word problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Emmaus Christian College - Brooklyn Park Campus.
