Be patient. Tutors cannot expect students to understand or get the question right the first time. It is important for tutors to understand where the student went wrong and to slowly and easily correct them by following the question. Once they grasped an understanding, tutors should give the student similar questions to practice so they are…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give them a personalised teaching experience. Often there are other factors at play in the progress of a student's learning than just their mental ability. Being able to recognise and connect to the child will open up numerous learning pathways to allow them to reach their full…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to accompany them upon their academic journey, and helping them along the way. Develop their love/passion for a particular subject/field. For young minds, effective tutoring/teaching is extremely important as it makes them aware of their career options and shapes them for good future prospects. When tutoring is improper, a student might quickly lose interest in a subject area which otherwise they may prove to be good at. I…

Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is listen. It is very important to be tuned in to how your student is doing and how they feel about their work. If the work is way too hard or way too easy, not as much progress will be seen. To help the students as best as possible, you must understand their current level, what they want or need to…

The most important thing by far, especially that I have found over the years, is to have a presence that shows genuine concern for the student's understanding. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is affirm their self-worth as a learner and as an individual. Create a space of no judgement, there are a lot of questions that students find intimidating to ask in a class environment, so as a tutor, creating a safe space for them to ask those questions is the most important goal to achieve. Not only does this allow for a further understanding of a topic, but also allows the student to be able to enjoy the…

Tutoring is going very well she's starting to show some progress now which is good and Deanna works her hard which is great.
Christine, Beacon Hill

Inside BrookvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Zac revised area formulas for rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles before applying Pythagoras' Theorem to mixed problems.

Year 10 student Mia worked on converting between fractions, percentages, and decimals as well as graphing linear equations using both algebraic and visual methods.

For Year 11, Josh tackled geometric sequences and series along with rates of change in motion questions, focusing on applying formulas to real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student showed impatience in algebra, often rushing to answers and skipping necessary steps—"gets easily stressed and skips easy steps," a tutor noted—which led to repeated errors in sign changes.

In Year 11, one student avoided writing out working for trigonometric equations, making it harder to spot index mistakes or simplify expressions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student tended to guess rather than use known strategies when asked about shapes and their properties, spending more time on trial-and-error than on reasoning through the problem. This guessing meant less practice with structured approaches and slower progress on new concepts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brookvale noticed a Year 10 student who previously rushed through algebra now takes time to check each step, catching errors that used to slip by.

Another high schooler has started asking for more challenging calculus problems after mastering the chain rule last session—a big shift from earlier reluctance with differentiation.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who used to freeze up on times tables now volunteers answers and even tries out new multiplication strategies without prompting.

In their latest lesson, she completed all her practice questions independently for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warringah Mall Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northern Beaches Secondary College Freshwater Senior Campus.
