A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

Ultimately, a tutor should aim to foster independence in students, empowering them to become self-directed learners who can take ownership of their education beyond the tutoring sessions. This includes teaching study skills, time management, and organizational strategies that can help students become more independent and successful learners. I can…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

A tutor's job is to teach. However, I do believe that the student's experience during their time learning most important. From my observations, students will not really pay attention if they are not interested or if they are not having a good time, which is why, in my opinion, it is important that students are having a good time while they are…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen, and to be a pillar of support they can lean on not only in their academics, but also in their personal lives. High school can be a really stressful period for students, not only in the immense pressure that students are under but also with the dramatic shifts their minds…

Besides knowledge and communication skills. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is offer an environment where they can comfortably learn and raise any concerns or questions they might have. This comes from building a good relationship with the student, which often not many tutors do, making the student's learning ineffective. Offering an organised and well thought…

I believe that the overarching role of a tutor is to have a lasting, positive impact on a student, and this is possible through various means. Firstly, they can support the student academically, by guiding them through difficult or foreign concepts step-by-step. Through this, a tutor can immensely improve a student's self-confidence and engagement…

The most important thing that is necessary in learning is that we understand what we study. Though it seems difficult, giving each student the individual attention is what a tutor should strive to achieve. The most important things a tutor can do are to provide clarity, encouragement, and structure. A tutor should simplify complex ideas, guide students through problems step by step, and foster a positive learning environment where questions are always welcome. From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

Being a good tutor requires you to be a good listener. Without listening to problems that students may experience, the time spent for both the student and the tutor will be wasted. I believe that there is no easy way in tutoring, the same as there is no easy way to get the answer. Whenever they are stuck it is our job to guide them through and companying them along. Whenever there are difficult times, give out the answers is never the way to solve the problem. I'm very patient when teaching my students, I wouldn't mind…

Inside Burwood EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex worked on two-digit by two-digit multiplication and progressed to division with remainders, often tackling worded problems for extra practice.

In Year 11, Keshara revised domain and range questions from the Methods syllabus and completed exam-style problems on transformations, including hyperbolas and parabolas.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Arjun focused on chemical analysis techniques such as IR and NMR spectrometry, alongside interpreting mass spectrometry data through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, a student "forgot to bring his SAC for review," missing a chance to address feedback before the next assessment.

In Year 8 English, homework was incomplete and spelling lists left at home, which meant less progress on writing structure and vocabulary.

A Year 12 Chemistry student's practical report was difficult to follow due to disorganised notes and uncollated results, slowing down her analysis.

Meanwhile, in Year 3–4 Maths, several students continued relying on finger counting instead of memorising times tables—"he still used hands for addition," one tutor noted—which made mental calculations slow during problem-solving.

Recent Achievements

A Burwood East tutoring session saw a Year 3 student, previously hesitant with larger multiplication problems, now requesting to tackle three-digit by two-digit questions and confidently working through each step without relying on memorisation alone.

In Year 11, one student who used to wait for explanations has started proactively asking questions about complex transformation topics, using this initiative to deepen his understanding—especially noticeable during recent exam preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 biology student put together her own practical report-writing guide after struggling with structure earlier in the term, now referring back to it independently while planning new assignments.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vermont South Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burwood East Primary School.
