Be honest as this helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. The tutor-student relationship should be viewed as a partnership. You are not there to take the place of the instructor. Let the student know you are there to work with her to supplement classroom and individual study. #…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. Although understanding a subject is extremely important, I believe the students' willingness to learn is equally important as trying to teach a student to…

It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

In my opinion, I think that it is important to understand every student is different and has their way of learning. It is important for a tutor to identify and tailor a plan for each student so that they are learning efficiently. For example, as I am a visual and auditory learner, I learn most efficiently by watching lectures and videos and less…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. First and foremost, for the student to improve his/her results in school. And beyond that, to get them to enjoy what they're doing (at least somewhat) - and push them into thinking creatively and originally. Also important, is to encourage and emphasize how what they're learning, will be relevant and useful in their day-to-day lives. I feel that…

Confidence is the most important thing a tutor can bring to a student struggling with English. Knowledge and new skills can be taught to anyone, but a tutor should be able to instil a confidence within student so they can bring these skills into their learning but also into their everyday life. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe to be wrong. So many students disengage from learning because they're afraid of making mistakes or looking unintelligent. Once that fear is removed, real learning can happen. Beyond that, I think a tutor should personalise every session understanding where the student is…

A tutor can make a student’s academic life less stressful and more successful by explaining lessons in a way that suits their age and level, with patience. A tutor should also make sure the student understands the concepts, not just memorizes them, and answer all the questions the student might be too shy to ask in class. Patience and creative…

Inside Camden ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mavis explored simple fraction addition and subtraction using physical representations, then linked her interest in marine life to a reading comprehension task about anglerfish.

In Year 10, Una worked on understanding break-even points and capital gains in Maths, alongside reviewing atomic theory and mole calculations for Chemistry.

For Year 11 Biology, Lily focused on exam preparation by practicing mock questions on DNA replication and protein synthesis, while also editing a biotechnology essay using her teacher's slides for support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left her maths booklet at home, so she was unable to complete planned activities—organization of materials remains a hurdle.

In senior Biology, one student's report was submitted unfinished, with the conclusion and discussion missing before the deadline ("the report was unfinished").

For a Year 11 Chemistry task, another struggled to include in-text references and faced grammatical issues that made her writing harder to follow.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student repeatedly checked each answer step-by-step for reassurance during algebra practice, slowing independent progress.

These moments left them scrambling or less confident during assessment preparation.

Recent Achievements

One Camden Park tutor noticed a Year 8 student who previously hesitated to read aloud now volunteering to tackle comprehension passages and even tackling unfamiliar words, showing real persistence when pronouncing trickier terms.

In a recent high school session, a senior student who used to miss key science definitions was able to recall and accurately explain challenging vocabulary like "vestigial" and "homologous structures," using the correct scientific language without prompting.

Another high schooler came prepared with her own list of last-minute questions for test revision, driving the session herself and finishing with clear answers on topics she'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Marion Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Plympton International College.
