Beyond simply teaching content, a tutor should help a student develop learning strategies, resilience, and independence. Creating a positive and trusting relationship is also…

A tutor needs to be able to make sessions engaging and enjoyable so their students will want to come back to each lesson. They need to also be able to be someone students can trust and feel comfortable with as they do spend a lot of time together. The hard work and determination I have to make sure my students can learn as much as possible means I…

I think the most important role of a tutor is to help students become independent and confident learners. That means in addition to explaining content, also making sure they understand the reasoning behind it so they can tackle problems on their own. It’s also important to create a comfortable environment where students feel safe to ask…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students in interact and engage with them, as this allows for the tutor to know the students and vice versa. This allows for an environment where students are willing to engage in class, as well as one where students do not feel afraid or embarrassed to ask questions or for help. My biggest…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to offer unwavering support and create a safe, non-judgmental space for learning. A great tutor motivates, encourages, and believes in their student — especially when the student struggles to believe in themselves. Helping them build confidence, celebrating small wins, and fostering a positive…

I believe that the most important aspect of one-on-one tutoring is being able to tailor teaching and communication methods to suit the specific individual student. Developing a dynamic teacher-student relationship allows a tutor to explain concepts in a way that both builds upon and fills in the gaps of students' existing knowledge. I pride myself…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is wholly believe in their capabilities. If a tutor/ teacher doesn't think that a student can succeed then it's pretty impossible to effectively help. Of course, this goes the other way as it is a tutors responsibility to ensure that the student believes in their own ability to succeed.…

Developing a work ethic in a student that will follow them throughout their lives. The most crucial skill a tutor can have is adaptability. No two students learn the same way, so I prioritize customizing my method of delivery rather than following a repetitive script. Equally important is building trust and comfort. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable and heard. By incorporating small things like checking in…

My mindset when it comes to learning isn’t about knowing facts, it’s about knowing the facts about how you come to know the facts. I don’t want students to come out of tutoring with just knowledge about HSC subjects, the focus should always be on skills that will carry on into the future. To a certain extent your role as a tutor is to teach…

I believe instilling a love of learning in your student is important for a tutor. This involves giving positive feedback and instilling confidence in your student. From my experience, a student will progress more if they understand the content being taught, rather than memorising the right answer. It is important for tutors to be patient. I try…

A tutor's main job is being present and open so the student feels free to ask anything. It's a two way process: the student shares what they currently understand, and the tutor listens closely enough to gently guide that understanding forward, not just deliver information at them. My strength is guiding independent learning. Rather than handing…

I think, the main part is understanding. Tutor should help students in understanding of the concepts and their purpose. Secondly, tutor should be understanding, so that he/she serves students according to their needs as different students have different ways of visualising things. Thirdly, tutor should help in planning of the subject so that…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

Inside CamperdownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Izzy practiced multiplying decimals by whole numbers and converting between fractions and decimals, also reviewing place value strategies.

In Year 10, Sarah focused on quadratic equations and algebraic skills, alongside poetry analysis of Wilfred Owen using sample English homework tasks.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Liam tackled differentiation techniques—working through turning points on advanced worksheets—and revised logarithms to strengthen calculus foundations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's algebra work revealed "neatness of working out" was lacking, which led to difficulty tracking errors during multi-step equations.

In Year 11 biology, the need for clearer note-taking and updating pathways—especially stimulus-response diagrams—was flagged; when these notes were unclear, recalling details in assessments became harder.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student hesitated to write steps for subtraction problems, even though he could do them mentally ("he needs to be prompted to write down each step of the calculation"). This sometimes left mistakes hidden until review time, costing confidence when corrections were needed under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Camperdown tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid asking questions now regularly requests clarification when she's unsure, especially with tricky chemistry titration steps.

A Year 10 student recently managed to sketch a graph independently involving both horizontal and vertical transitions without relying on the table of values—a skill he previously found intimidating.

In primary sessions, Ryan, who once hesitated with multi-step word problems, has started converting these into equations independently and completed most grade 2-level tasks on his own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newtown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newtown North Public School.
