The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them carefully and attentively showing all engagement towards the student. This allows the tutor to understand what is difficult and what is easier for the student and at the same time displays to the student that the tutor cares and wants to better the student's life. I am…

Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

Understanding the individual needs and learning styles of each student is crucial. Also, fostering a supportive, non-judgmental environment is key for students to ask questions freely and grasp concepts without worrying about making mistakes. Lastly, finding alternative strategies for solving problems is very important if the student is stuck on a…

As a tutor, the ability to get a student invested in the topic they are learning and keep it sustained by making the process an organized effort through active conversations and dialogue is vital in any classroom. One of the most important things a tutor can do is instill confidence in their students so they can tackle problems they were previously unfimiliar with on their own, as well as perform in high stress environments, such as tests. I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

I believe that the greatest affect that a good tutor can do for a student is to infatuate the student into the subject, meaning to truly engage and interest the student in the topic. Once this happens the student will grow a love for the subject, leading them to career paths regarding this subject. This will more importantly grow a work ethic for…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I do not think it is not enough for a tutor to simply talk through the topic with the student and expect them to understand it. A tutor should explain the topic to the student and then, after more study…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to make learning simple, build the student's confidence, and create a safe space where they don't feel scared to ask questions. Inside CarinaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through index laws and practiced expanding and factorising algebraic expressions, using a mix of textbook problems and quick-fire drills.

For Year 9, Sam focused on rearranging algebraic formulas to make a pronumeral the subject, then substituted values into these to evaluate results, including some extension questions involving cross-multiplication.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily tackled financial mathematics topics like simple interest calculations and also revisited linear relationships from earlier in the term for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, a student repeatedly relied on reminders for each step in multi-stage problems, as one tutor noted: "I was constantly reminding him of small things." This dependence slowed progress when tackling unfamiliar algebra and worded questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student's messy written work in mental multiplication and inconsistent handwriting sometimes led to confusion when checking answers.

In senior assignments, another student delayed acting on teacher feedback, resulting in unfinished drafts and missed opportunities to improve essays before deadlines.

During primary maths sessions, drifting focus meant larger calculations were often abandoned halfway through, leaving gaps in understanding.

Recent Achievements

One Carina tutor saw a Year 10 student make a big leap in independence: after weeks of double-checking every step, he finally worked through all his linear equation questions solo, only asking for help when genuinely unsure.

A Year 8 girl who used to freeze on tricky worded maths problems now confidently breaks them down herself—she recently identified the right units and showed every step of her working, which is new for her.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised his tutor by reading an entire passage aloud with barely any hesitation after struggling with this just two sessions ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carina Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Martin's School.
