Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think that fear of failure is one of the big issues in learning, because if you are scared to try something even if you're unsure, you'll never be able to learn and succeed. To me the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be compassionate, dedicated, understanding and patient. We need to be able to relate to how the students feels to truly be able to guide them at their own pace of learning. Being impatient and giving up on students will only lower the motivation and self-confidence of the student,…

A tutor must make themselves approachable and be a role model figure to their students. As someone they have a more personalized time space with compared to their school teachers, the students are often likely to look up to their tutors as figures of inspiration and personal ceilings. It is our duty as these figures to not just live up to their…

For me, I personally consider the ability of independent thinking is what a tutor really needs to teach his students across all the subjects, it is not only about memorizing the standardized formulas of problem-solving but also understanding the hidden logic of the methods. I believe the most important thing I should've done to my students is to…

Becoming a lifelong role model is crucial in supporting students. Many of them keep their issues hidden, and as adults, we may overlook or avoid addressing these concerns. Some students might not even recognize they have problems. Being a dependable role model and a safe space for them are among the most vital ways to help them. Patience: Having…

The most important thing a tutor needs to do is help the students understand. This comes in many aspects as simply explaining to them new concepts is not enough. A good tutor should listen to their student's problems and try to solve them in the best way possible and if needed, get back to them later. Also, regular feedback should be given to the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. The first thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to understand their difficulties and to set up a learning plan that is personalized and helpful. Lessons should give plenty of opportunities for students to test their knowledge as well as focusing on any grey areas by explaining any difficult concepts again. The second thing and perhaps…

Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
