The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them build confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should create a safe and supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes without judgment. The most important thing I could do as a tutor for my student would be to be able to share a different style of learning to them and to teach them how to love the subject they are studying. Most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient with them until they understand a concept, and not just tell them the answer. Making the student think about the problem and solve it themselves is the way the student learns and thrive academically, My strengths as a tutor are trying to find ways to explain the same concept in a…

I want to ensure that the student feels comfortable, and I want them to speak up when any concerns arise. I don't want interactions to be awkward as I believe that being preserved is an obstacle in effective learning. An essential aspect for a tutor would be to approach teaching the topic in a way that is comfortable but fun for the student, allowing them to digest what needs to be taught in learnable chunks that do not cause trouble in calling back information. I think my ability to relate with students would be beneficial. Having recently finished school, I…

Inside CarmelTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Tanvi explored film analysis techniques with a focus on themes and symbolism in *Rabbit-Proof Fence*, then applied these skills by annotating poetry including works by Dylan Thomas and Maya Angelou.

Year 10 sessions with Jake included working through index laws and formula rearrangement, plus solving linear equations and tackling worded algebra problems using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Priya revised trigonometric ratios—Soh Cah Toa—and practiced multistep problems involving sine rule and quadratic equations, building confidence through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student, after being assigned World War I research as homework, did not complete it; as a result, lesson time had to be spent on research instead of essay writing.

In Year 8 Maths, untidy working and inconsistent setting out led to errors when copying numbers—one tutor noted, "he mistook a 36 for 30 after rewriting the 6."

For a younger learner in Year 5, hesitation was observed before attempting problems independently due to fear of mistakes. This slowed progress and made it difficult to develop confidence with new material.

Recent Achievements

One Carmel tutor noticed a real shift with Tanvi, a high school student who previously struggled to write independently—she completed all her poem annotations without any help and tackled a review essay draft on her own before accepting editing feedback.

Another high schooler, Niru, used to avoid explaining his reasoning out loud in maths; now he's regularly talking through problems step by step and even goes back over past mistakes to check his knowledge, showing new initiative.

Meanwhile, Josh (Year 7) began applying algebraic formulas on his own and clearly explained each stage as he solved for x.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kalamunda Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carmel Adventist College.
