I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, beyond the obvious helping them succeed in the subject you are tutoring them in, is give them confidence in their own ability. The student is not always going to have a tutor with them. It is important that they believe that they can succeed on their own. I am a patient person. I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

I consider patience to be an important quality for a tutor. Students shouldn't feel less intelligent because they may struggle to understand a particular topic. It is essential not to get frustrated and provide useful and encouraging feedback. I believe that knowledge of psychology will allow me understand the needs and individuality of each…

I consider the following as critical things a tutor can do for a student: - Ability to empathise with the student. This helps with connecting with the students, and creates a safe learning space for them - Ability to listen. In the classroom settings, some teachers are unable to connect with all the students due to the large number and rigid…

Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them to understand the work that they are doing in a school setting in a way that is specific to their learning style and helps them to feel comfortable replicating the same skills at school. It is extremely important that a tutor also helps a child to understand that just because…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only to teach them what to think, but show them how they can independently develop their own original ideas - how they think. This is particularly true for humanities subjects such as English, where it may be challenging for a student to develop their own ideas and write essays…

Not only to help them with academics as the main goal of a tutor, but also to be a friend and have positive influence on them. Attitude can actually make the difference. Strength: Communication. Not only tutoring, all jobs need effective communication. I believe I can make the students understand, I have tutored before and the students really…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student for mi consideration would be listening to my students and get to know them in order to adjust and assess my strategy and way of teaching as a tutor, and in that way the tutor can be the most creative as it can, giving hints and techniques to students on how to think by themselves, question…

For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

Apart from being knowledgeable in the field it is essential that a tutor is able to communicate properly, so that the students understand and absorb the concepts and ideas that are being explained. From a more human point of view, a tutor needs to show the student that they are there to help them and create a comfortable environment for the…

Personally I think the most important strategy a tutor can adopt is to try and give the student the space to figure out the answer themselves; rather than giving it to them. This will force the student to take an active approach to learning rather than passively listening to the tutor, which I have learnt can be tempting but is ultimately less…

Consistency. I have been a tutor to some students for over a year. Sarah McGregor, Carnegie

Inside CarnegieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucas worked on measurement conversions between units and explored different types of angles using visual examples.

In Year 9, Sarah practised expanding and simplifying algebraic equations to solve for "x," along with adding terms involving variables and numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Aiden focused on quadratic equations—both solving them and reviewing their graphical representations as parabolas—in preparation for an upcoming quiz.

Recent Challenges

Homework was incomplete for a Year 7 student, which limited progress in consolidating division and multiplication skills—one lesson note simply read, "Homework was incomplete."

In Year 9 algebra, confusion with equation signs persisted when working through substitution tasks; as one tutor observed, "Alex is slightly confused by the sign while substituting value in the equation," leading to repeated errors during practice.

A senior student tackling probability scenarios sometimes hesitated to start multi-step problems, pausing at worded questions and requiring extra prompts to extract relevant information before attempting solutions. This often meant less time spent on building fluency and confidence within sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Carnegie tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with matrix multiplication; after revisiting earlier lessons, she now attempts the harder two-matrix problems without waiting for help.

Another high school student has gone from struggling with algebraic manipulation to quickly solving for unknowns—her speed and accuracy have noticeably improved during problem sets.

In primary, one learner who often guessed answers now takes time to double-check fractions before responding out loud. Last session, he completed every question on his own and asked for an extra challenge at the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carnegie Primary School.
