A tutor must understand a student from within from their thinking style to their work ethic. This is the crux of a tutor's job as understanding this will allow the tutor to provide the right personalised learning approach for the student. Along with that, every tutor must ensure that their student feels confident in their subject as confidence…

Being open with students, sharing each and every thing i know, let students do mistakes because this is how they learn. Making mistakes make you realise where you are going wrong. I can share my whole Mathematics. Which includes other possible methods to solve the same problem. My main strength would be friendly learning sessions with…

Be supportive and understand of their needs. Everyone learns in different ways, and it is my job as a tutor to teach them in the way that they can learn and gain the most from. I am able to reframe and recommunicate ideas in different ways to assist with explaining concepts to students. I am kind and empathetic, and I always know that a student…

I think not just to teach but to integrate the mathematics into their brain. Ways to do this include repetition, paraphrasing and getting them to say things back to me in their own words, these three things are extremely important so that they don't jut forget things when I leave. I think I'm really good at explaining the maths, carefully and…

Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

A tutor can make or break a students fervour towards a subject. He can make a concept really easy for students to understand and make confident. A tutor can really make a student love a subject by his way of teaching. I have a good way to go with students and have strong hold of math concepts. I do think patience, good Communication Skills and the Ability to Make Students Visualise. Also the self-discipline. For one, the number of students working with tutors continues to grow. Two, working 1:1 with students is immensely gratifying, both for the tutor and tutee. And three, a few specific yet generalised characteristics become…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. From my own experience, I know how powerful it is when someone takes the time to understand your gaps, explain things at…

I believe it's crucial for the instructor to first comprehend the student. As a former tutor, I am of the opinion that not every lesson is fully understood by students the first time around. The tutor must make sure to reiterate everything till the student is able to grasp it. As was previously mentioned, a tutor must be on time and patient with…

From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to allow their minds to create their own version of knowledge rather than just gaining a pre-existing idea. It's only when we challenge the students to think out of the box that they actually start realising the importance of what was in the box. Sarah McGregor, Carnegie

Inside CarnegieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucas worked on measurement conversions between units and explored different types of angles using visual examples.

In Year 9, Sarah practised expanding and simplifying algebraic equations to solve for "x," along with adding terms involving variables and numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Aiden focused on quadratic equations—both solving them and reviewing their graphical representations as parabolas—in preparation for an upcoming quiz.

Recent Challenges

Homework was incomplete for a Year 7 student, which limited progress in consolidating division and multiplication skills—one lesson note simply read, "Homework was incomplete."

In Year 9 algebra, confusion with equation signs persisted when working through substitution tasks; as one tutor observed, "Alex is slightly confused by the sign while substituting value in the equation," leading to repeated errors during practice.

A senior student tackling probability scenarios sometimes hesitated to start multi-step problems, pausing at worded questions and requiring extra prompts to extract relevant information before attempting solutions. This often meant less time spent on building fluency and confidence within sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Carnegie tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with matrix multiplication; after revisiting earlier lessons, she now attempts the harder two-matrix problems without waiting for help.

Another high school student has gone from struggling with algebraic manipulation to quickly solving for unknowns—her speed and accuracy have noticeably improved during problem sets.

In primary, one learner who often guessed answers now takes time to double-check fractions before responding out loud. Last session, he completed every question on his own and asked for an extra challenge at the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carnegie Primary School.
