Inside Carrum DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Natalia worked on converting fractions to decimals and practiced simplifying fractions, focusing on step-by-step written solutions.

For Year 8, Jay tackled solving linear equations and explored finding angles using trigonometric ratios.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Marcus concentrated on expanding binomial products in quadratic expressions and factorising trinomials, with an emphasis on clear working out at each stage.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were evident across year levels.

In Year 8 mathematics, one student's working out was often unclear—"he needs to make his working out clear to gain full marks", and in algebra, skipping written steps led to confusion when checking answers.

In VCE English, a senior student focused too narrowly on details in article analysis, making it "harder to elaborate on certain areas," and struggled to name techniques in written work despite verbal understanding.

Homework completion was also inconsistent; for example, one secondary student did not submit assigned maths tasks, leaving gaps before the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Carrum Downs tutor noticed a big shift in Charlotte's attitude—she used to get distracted, but now she sticks with maths tasks for longer stretches and even asked for help when she was unsure, instead of giving up.

In Year 10, one student had always found algebraic factorisation confusing, but after several sessions working through examples together, they managed to factorise trinomials independently and could explain why it's the opposite of expanding.

Meanwhile, Natalia (Year 12) struggled last term to support her essay arguments; now she's deconstructing articles into sub-arguments on her own and picking out relevant quotes without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carrum Downs Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joachim's School.
