Being patient and understanding. As a former student, I know first hand how disheartening it is to fail and be critiqued by teachers. I want to encourage them despite failures and to keep pushing them to keep trying their hardest. My biggest strength is my adaptability. I know from experience that there isn't a set method of teaching and some…

A tutor can provide an avenue, a way out when a student encounter some problems in their studies. I am an alternative to their parents, in regards to their learning. Hence, it is important for me to get the students to trust me and have no hesitation to come to me to discuss any problem they encounter in their learning. Connection with my students…

The single most important thing an english tutor can do is encourage students. Without encouragement and support a student cannot learn anything. As a tutor it is our job to boost our students self esteem and confidence in their own abilities in that subject. I always want my students to feel comfortable around me and never be afraid to speak up…

I think to provide a larger framework or paradigm for what they are learning. When something fits into a context for "why" they are learning a concept. Mainly being able to listen to the student. I think I'm enthusiastic about getting to know them and what they care about, which helps me teach. Rather than just trying to do a…

Believing in the students is the most important thing an english tutor can do for their student. Some students may not believe in themselves and will need an extra boost or encouragement to believe they can do it as every student has the potential to do well. It all depends in the amount of motivation they have and how willing they are to put in…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in an english tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. I think the most important thing to do as a tutor is to amend the teaching style for different students. Motivation was one of the things that I and many of my peers struggled with, and so, the last thing I want is for my student to not be engaged in the content. One way to do this to include connections to the student's interests. In addition,…

Inside Carrum DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Natalia worked on converting fractions to decimals and practiced simplifying fractions, focusing on step-by-step written solutions.

For Year 8, Jay tackled solving linear equations and explored finding angles using trigonometric ratios.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Marcus concentrated on expanding binomial products in quadratic expressions and factorising trinomials, with an emphasis on clear working out at each stage.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were evident across year levels.

In Year 8 mathematics, one student's working out was often unclear—"he needs to make his working out clear to gain full marks", and in algebra, skipping written steps led to confusion when checking answers.

In VCE English, a senior student focused too narrowly on details in article analysis, making it "harder to elaborate on certain areas," and struggled to name techniques in written work despite verbal understanding.

Homework completion was also inconsistent; for example, one secondary student did not submit assigned maths tasks, leaving gaps before the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Carrum Downs tutor noticed a big shift in Charlotte's attitude—she used to get distracted, but now she sticks with maths tasks for longer stretches and even asked for help when she was unsure, instead of giving up.

In Year 10, one student had always found algebraic factorisation confusing, but after several sessions working through examples together, they managed to factorise trinomials independently and could explain why it's the opposite of expanding.

Meanwhile, Natalia (Year 12) struggled last term to support her essay arguments; now she's deconstructing articles into sub-arguments on her own and picking out relevant quotes without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carrum Downs Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joachim's School.
