The most important thing a tutor can offer his student is the gift of knowledge. My excellent ability to make sure my student understands the content instead of rote memorizing is the key to success. I will encourage my students to not just accept the given answers but question them. This skill is the key to extensive thinking which is what the…

Be able to understand that not every student is the same. Everyone's unique and their learning styles are different, so approaching every student with the same method to teach is not a good idea. Making sure to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each individual student and tutor according to their strengths and weaknesses. Finally, the…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is positively and kindly assist the student in learning new things and help them understand their work. In doing this, a tutor is giving the student tools for future success in life and helping them grow and develop in a positive manner. I believe that my good communication skills and patience will…

I believe a tutor plays a crucial role in molding a student's academic journey, aside from their time spent at school. It is imperative to build a good working relationship with the student, which will aid the student in being comfortable and clarifying all doubts. This is important because I have met many students who are under the assumption…

Equip them with the ability to eventually solve problems independently. At the end of the day, the role of tutoring is to help students foster independent thinking so they can overcome academic challenges on their own, because being self-sufficient is important. Also, I try to foster enthusiasm in the subjects being taught, so students can…

Always be as clear with them as possible, and be ready for whatever questions they might have for you. Remember to always be challenging the student, but only a little bit at a time so they don't feel overwhelmed. Also important is to make sure they celebrate when they make progress so that they don't have to wait until their next test or exam…

Enhance students' confidence in their academic ability and empower them to achieve their dreams. I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

Academically, I want to be able to build a student's confidence in their mastery of the subject, and familiarize the students with questions that may come up in an exam. This is done as I'll get to know the student and create a positive, engaging study atmosphere during the session. Non-academically, I want to help students make studying and their…

A tutor is someone that helps students with their academic studies so that they get a better understanding of the subject .So for example, for biology subject ,a tutor needs to explain the concept rather then helping them reciting the subject without understanding. I think the tutor has to be someone who is warm and friendly, and someone who the student sees as approachable yet still respects enough to take the lessons seriously. The student needs to feel confident in being able to ask the tutor any questions that they may be unsure about and so the dynamic needs to be one that is welcoming and accepting. I…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. Inside ClarindaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex practised addition and subtraction with and without regrouping using worded problems, and explored multiplication through different strategies including times tables.

In Year 9, Jasmine focused on trigonometric ratios to solve for missing sides or angles in triangles, making use of calculator techniques and applying these skills to 2D geometry problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael worked through polynomial long division and the remainder/factor theorem, then applied these methods to solve cubic equations.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 3 reading session, one student struggled to stay focused, attempting to juggle multiple books at once and joking instead of engaging with the text—making it hard to complete any story meaningfully.

In Year 10 Maths, "she left her notes at school again and was forced to flip through pages of digital files," which slowed problem-solving in finance questions and increased confusion over formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student repeatedly missed bringing her CAS calculator home, limiting her ability to practice data entry and graphing between sessions.

Missed homework and disorganized materials kept resurfacing as stumbling blocks across grades.

Recent Achievements

A Clarinda tutor noticed that a Year 3 student, Julian, made a big leap in reading—he now sounds out unfamiliar words by himself instead of skipping them.

In high school maths, Jaxon (Year 10) started taking his own notes and simplifying tricky content, which helped him remember key concepts from earlier sessions—previously he'd forget details week to week.

Another high school win: after struggling with statistics tests before, one student scored 86 on her latest assessment and was able to explain her working without prompting, showing much more independence than at the start of tutoring.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Andrew's School.
