Pass on experience and knowledge, so that the students can understand the topic at a conceptual level. A student that understands the core concepts behind a topic will be best prepared to take their study to a higher level so that is the most important thing a tutor can teach. I think I'm friendly and approachable as a tutor. I believe this is of…

I believe the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of your students with pinpoint accuracy, in order to holistically improve their attributes as a learner, as well as balance encouragement with criticism, to make sure that students are simultaneously confident and grounded. I think the fact that I…

Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. I once was a student and understand the importance of understanding a subject…

A tutor should not just solve a question for a student, rather they need to supply the foundations and processes that allow a question to be broken down and solved easily. A tutor should also be able to connect to students, rather than having a purely academic relationship, the students need to feel comfortable they can ask questions and also…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is share their passion for the subject. This requires the tutor to be committed to helping the student understand the target subject in a way that is unique to each and every student. In the best case, having a brilliant tutor allows a student to create a pathway and a future in a…

Probably the most important thing is making it safe to be confused out loud. A lot of students hide what they don't understand because they're embarrassed, and if a tutor doesn't create space for "I actually don't get this at all," you end up polishing gaps instead of fixing them. Beyond that, I think a good tutor builds independence rather than…

I consider openness and willingness to hear out students' problems at the earliest possible moment to ensure that a student feels confident with something they may initially be unfamiliar with and are about to dive deeper in to be one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. As a tutor, I believe I have a strong ability and…

Its a very open question in my point of view but, if I want to say it as brief as I can its backing them up making them reach a certain level and then teaching them how to fish instead of just giving them fish and when they learn how to fish giving them tips for catching bigger fish. I believe a tutor should know phycology so he/she knows how to…

A tutor can show the beauty of the subject and make the student love the subject. Once that happens, the student can excel not only in that subject, but can also approach everything in life with confidence and aptitude. I love teaching - That would be my greatest strength. A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

I believe that the most important thing about a tutor is their ability to motivate and encourage a student in their learning journey. A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. I think this helps differentiate tutoring from normal schooling as normal schooling is generalised for all students and doesn't cater for individual students' strengths and weaknesses. I believe…

Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lucy worked through surface area and volume calculations in measurement, followed by trigonometry basics using visual aids.

For Year 10, Daniel focused on mastering linear equations and interpreting univariate data sets, with practice constructing and analysing graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on bivariate data analysis and time series interpretation, applying these skills to real-world scenarios in her textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, a student left notes at school and relied on scattered digital files during finance revision; as the tutor observed, "he was flipping through pages to find a particular formula," which slowed progress and caused confusion with recurrence relations.

For VCE Maths Methods, another student frequently entered incorrect data into the CAS calculator or forgot to bring it home for practice, leading to incomplete preparation for graphing tasks.

Meanwhile, in Year 3 English, unclear punctuation and skipping question instructions—such as colouring more items than asked—created repeated misunderstandings mid-lesson that disrupted focus and accuracy.

Recent Achievements

One Clayton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who now takes the lead in making clear, simplified notes during sessions—something he rarely attempted before—which has helped him remember key trigonometry tips from previous lessons.

In a senior session, another student tackled her Statistics test with noticeably more confidence, scoring 86 after consistently struggling on earlier assessments and using her calculator skills much more independently this time.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised his tutor by speaking up to ask for extra explanations about converting length units, rather than waiting passively as he had done at first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's School.
